Montreal Pool Room
Where: 1200 Boulevard St-Laurent

At just $1.35 for one of their legendary “steamies,” you can’t beat this greasy spoon as far as bang for your buck. Even better, for not much more they’ll throw some poutine on it for a hefty dose of Montreal’s trashy-but-delicious offerings. The location across the street from Café Cleopatra and next door to the Sexotheque makes for an interesting mix of clintele, and a great change of scenery from your books.
Boustan
Where: 2020 Rue Crescent
Campus: Concordia University
Montreal is overflowing with restaurants offering shish taouk (chicken sandwiches wrapped in pita), but Boustan stands alone as the place to go for one. Concordia students love to come here for their garlic sauce, a creamy and delicious treat that they’ll happily heap on your sandwich or your potatoes. Get a tasty overview of their menu with “The Creation,” an off-the-menu item that puts chicken, egg, potatoes, and eggplant inside of a pita.
Restaurant Mavi
Where: 5327 Avenue Gastineau
Campus: Université de Montréal
Look no further for Portuguese food in Montreal. Delicious grilled chicken, sardines, and chorizo are a great way to eat your stress away. Better yet, all of their protein options come with salad, rice, and some of the city’s best fries. You’ll have to wait a bit, but it’s a small price to pay for food this good.
Buns
Where: 2855 Rue St-Catherine
Campus: Concordia University
The menu isn’t deep here. It’s just burgers, fries, and shakes. But they put everything they’ve got into their limited range of options. At just $5 for a burger, you’ll still have enough cash for one after a night of getting ready for that big exam. As a bonus, they’ll throw a slice of mozzarella on it for no additional cost.
Le Viet Sandwich
Where: 292 Rue St-Catherine
Campus: McGill University
One of the city’s better cheap Vietnamese joints. $4 will buy you almost any of their delicious pork, chicken, seafood, or vegetarian sandwiches. It’s sure-fire bet to satisfy your Banh Mi craving and give you the fuel you need to do your last bit of cramming.
Hinnawi Bros Bagel and Cafe
Where: 372 Rue Sherbrooke
Campus: UQAM
There’s no wrong way to take in one of Montreal’s legendary bagels, but eating them as part of a sandwich is one of the better options. Sure, Hinnawi will help you get your typical lox and cream cheese fix. But if you’re looking to branch out, try their Argentina bagel, which comes piled with filet mignon, peppers, tomatoes, eggs, lettuce, and mozzarella. UQAM students love to grab these between classes.
Boucherie Atlantique

Looking to get some meat on the go? This European delicatessen is here to help you out. They've become a hit with U de M students for their Melangé Maison, a mixture of German cold cuts. You won’t regret it.

Campus: UQAM
It’s pretty hard to go wrong with a $3.25 Banh Mi, and Vua provides just that. If sandwiches aren’t your thing, you’ll still find something to satisfy your craving between their sushi and their sesame desert balls. If you're in the library late and are looking for a great deal, stop by after 9 pm for 30% off all of their to-go items.
Café Santropol
Where: 3990 Rue St-Urbain
Campus: McGill University
If you’re in the mood for a sandwich but don’t want the usual deli fare, Santropol just might do the trick. A particular crowd favorite is the Killer Tomato, which combines cream cheese, sundried tomatoes, basil, and garlic.
