10 Fall 2015 Road Trips Close To Montreal

Travelling in the fall is seriously underrated - the changing leaves are gorgeous, you won't freeze or melt, and your travel costs are cut way down in the off-season. Not to mention a long weekend away can really help you decompress if the semester is really starting to get to you.

Now before you read this and ask, "What about Quebec City? Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean? New York?" let me direct you over to Synden's awesome article from last year.

1. Stratford, Ontario

Your perfect destination if: You enjoy art, theatre, and chilling on the water

The drive: 6 h 15 min via ON 401-W

What to do in Stratford:

  • Enjoy plays and musicals at the Stratford Festival (obviously)
  • Go on a boat tour - or rent your own boat!
  • Eat yummy but affordable food in charming restaurants

2. Mont Tremblant, Quebec

Your perfect destination if: You want to enjoy the mountain air and you don’t want to drive very far

The drive: 1 h 25 min via Autoroute 15 N

What to do in Mont Tremblant:

  • Commune with nature by hiking, biking, and riding the gondola up to the top of the mountain
  • Get your blood pumping with rock climbing, dune buggy-driving, luging, and ziplining
  • Enjoy the restaurants and quaint shops in the walking village

3. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Your perfect destination if: You just need to get away from everything for a while

The drive: 6 h via the I-89 S

What to do in Cape Cod:

  • Talk to the fishermen at the port in Hyannis, and then go enjoy the fresher-than-fresh seafood
  • Relax by golfing, fishing, and walking on the beach (just as beautiful in the autumn chill!)
  • Go whale-watching and have your mind blown

4. Toronto, Ontario

Your perfect destination if: You want to go site-seeing and shopping… but you want to do it outside of Montreal

The drive: 5 h 10 min via the ON-401 W

What to do in Toronto:

  • Freak yourself out on the glass floor of the CN Tower
  • Nerd out at Ripley’s Aquarium and the Royal Ontario Museum
  • Go shopping at the Eaton Centre

5. Boston, Massachusetts

You perfect destination if: You love history and art, AND beer (contact me if this is you because we need to be friends!)

The drive: 5 h via I-89 S

What to do in Boston:

  • Go on a tour through the city’s many awesome breweries
  • Check out the historical sites and museums (Tea Party Ships & Museum, anyone?)
  • Spend hours wandering the city’s art museums

6. Stowe, Vermont

Your perfect destination if: You just want to get outside and have fun

The drive: 2 h 15 min via Autoroute 35 S

What to do in Stowe:

  • Go hiking, biking, and golfing
  • Enjoy an aerial view of the changing leaves by ziplining or riding in a hot air balloon
  • Check out the distilleries and wineries in the area

7. Niagara Falls, Ontario

Your perfect destination if: You want to see a World Wonder, gamble, and ride a 19-story Ferris wheel all in the same afternoon

The drive: 6 h 20 min via ON-401 W

What to do in Niagara Falls:

  • See the falls! Bonus points if you ride the Maid of the Mist
  • Check out at the casino
  • Unleash your inner child at the kitschy attractions on Clifton Hill

8. Thousand Islands, Ontario

Your perfect destination if: You and your boyfriend want to take a trip together, but you want romance and he wants to play outdoor sports

The drive: 3 h 10 min via ON-401 W

What to do in Thousand Islands:

  • Take a site-seeing cruise (you can even see castles!)
  • Go bass fishing, golfing, and scuba diving
  • Check out the Bay Drive-In Theatre

9. Ottawa, Ontario

Your perfect destination if: You’ve never seen to the Capitol

The drive: 2 h via the ON-417 W

What to do in Ottawa:

  • Fly in a WWII biplane at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum
  • Get patriotic at Parliament Hill and the Royal Canadian Mint
  • Drive out to Gattineay Park for some time in the great outdoors

10. Saratoga Springs, New York

Your perfect destination if: You like horses, gambling, and/or thrill-seeking

The drive: 1 h via the I-87 S

What to do in Saratoga Springs:

  • Bet on a horse at the race track and feel all sophisticated - or go to the rodeo and feel like a cowboy
  • Get your adrenaline running by skydiving or going to Six Flags
  • Then chill out on a tour of the mineral springs
