10 Signs To Spot And Drop A Fake Friend

Don't fake it till you make it.
10 Signs To Spot And Drop A Fake Friend

We've all been there. Everyone has had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a shady person who, against your better judgement, ends up becoming a friend and eventually wreaking havoc on your social life. Unfortunately this still happens long after high school is over, so here are some signs that you'll hopefully notice before it's too late and you're in too deep.

1. They drain you of your energy

These people are usually time consuming and take up every last bit of your energy. They either use every second of your time together to involve you in their self-made problems or they put you down to raise themselves up. Sooner or later your energy is drained, and you're left wondering why.

2. They love drama and are often proud of it

Please stay away from these people. These are the kinds of people that model their lives after reality tv shows and actually gain energy through any sort of problem that floats through their lives.

3. They make you feel guilty for no reason

Friends like these will often make you feel guilty for the smallest occurrences, like cancelling plans or having other priorities that demand your attention. More often than not they will demand your attention and once they get it they will never let go of it.

4. They push you to make the wrong decisions

True, real friendships push you to do better and make good decisions. Fake friends encourage bad behaviour, bad decisions and take you down with them. Unless you're into that sort of lifestyle.

5. They try to change you in negative ways

Whether they do it consciously or not, friends like these will try to change you to fit their idea of what kind of person they think you should be. This isn't the type of friendship that changes you for the better overall.

6. They constantly say one thing, but do the opposite

This type of friendship is the equivalent of a very confusing rollercoaster ride. One day they tell you they're starting anew, embracing positivity and becoming a new person, and the next day they're back on a pub crawl doing 16 shots and crying in a corner about their latest relationship problem.

7. They threaten to end your friendship when a situation doesn't end up in their favour

Whether its an argument that they can't seem to win, or any situation that they aren't in control of, these friends will often treat you badly if they don't get their way and then come running back when they realize they were wrong.

8. They use you for their own benefit

For whatever reason, these people need others around them to lift themselves up constantly. They often use their friends as a means of making themselves feel better - but neglect to do the same for you.

9. You constantly feel the need to agree with them just to keep from fighting

Keeping the peace in this type of friendship probably takes up 98% of your time. If you feel like walking on eggshells has become your life's pastime, it's time to reevaluate the friendship.

10. They simply aren't trustworthy

Let's face it. Your gut is often right about most people, and if your instincts are telling you that you cannot trust this person with anything you tell them, then you've spotted a fake friend. These people will tell anyone your deepest secrets, your most humiliating stories and even exploit your secret insecurities as a joke. Congratulations, you've successfully spotted a fake friend.
