Montreal, among other things, is known for being a city that promotes individualism. The men of our city have very unique traits that help identify them as a Montrealer with an attitude.
We compiled a short list of stereotypes we think match the different men of Montreal and its boroughs.

Stylish, Born and raised Montreal Kid
Sleek, stylish, and everything that independent clothing companies aspire to be in human form. Everything he does is a subtle homage to โReal Montrealโโthe one that existed before it stopped existing. Which happened way, way before you got here.
The only thing he loves more than Montreal is his own infatuation with the city itself.
Natural Habitat: He has a love for the neighborhood he grew up in. NDG/Cรดte des Neiges
Fresh out of a 1875 Salon in Paris
This type can be found fresh off the liberal arts/grad school grind, thoroughly impressed with the fact that he can quote Proustโs Wikipedia Page and constantly dreams about being in a Salon in Paris discussing art and literature.
You'll find him at art galleries discussing art history with whoever is brave enough to listen. Itโs difficult to tell whatโs more exhausting; trying to keep up in conversation, or looking at his scarf.
Natural Habitat: Mile-End, Plateau.
Workaholic
Those 80 hour workweeks bring in quite the cash, but this specimenโs greatest asset is that he gets to tell everyone he can only stay at the bar for another 30 minutes. For visual proof, he will place his work phone at the table to ensure everyone knows how irrefutably valuable he is to society.
If heโs single, itโs not because heโs getting after it every weekend in stereotypical styleโitโs because he legitimately doesn't have the time to court a girl heโs interested in.
Natural Habitat: Griffintown, Oldport and when he gets out of his comfort zone Bernard St. in Outremont.

Artist with a capital A
He is pursuing a career as an artist. Be it music, comedy, or celebrity background dancing, his life is a series of humorous clichรฉs. His life is โawesomeโ in the sense that heโs pursuing what he wants to, but 99.3% of every day is spent being worried about money.
Heโs fun to date for about five minutes, but heโs too in love with himself for it to really go anywhere.
Natural Habitat: Somewhere along Parc ave./He lives in his Studio somewhere in Ville Marie
Craft Beer Joe
Heโs got a decent job, but ultimately one with limited passion. Heโs therefore made a point to channel his surprisingly considerable frustration through exploring the world of socially acceptable vices, 420 friendly, but Shh don't tell his boss.
Given its minor douchiness and barrier for entry (you generally have to be wearing a jacket, a flannel, and boast an additional 3-5 layers of gentrification to qualify for this hobby), craft beer is a no-brainer. He has few friends and expects you to jump in and accommodate to his standards.
Natural Habitat: He just bought a condo in HOMA/ St. Henri.
Banlieusard
This guy only moved to Montreal because half of his friends were going there, and figured city life would just be a natural extension of life in the โBanlieueโ. Alas, not the case at all, and this relatively good-hearted man has had enough.
His resume landed him a good entry-level position, the job with a reputable law firm, but his critical thinking skills have taken him out of the game. For if this is what success looks like, he wants no part of it.
Wholesome enough to be โthe one,โ but you'll have to move back to the โburbs to land him.
Natural Habitat: Somewhere East, near the Olympic Stadium where town houses could be good for his dog and a newborn.
Montreal deep in his soul
I am not here to tell you what Montreal feels and sounds like, given that articles of that nature are written about 4,000 times per hour. But this speciesโs interpretation โone that balances despair and elation in an harmonious mannerโis quite fascinating to observe. He makes you love the city so easily. Itโs as if he gets broken up with every day, yet falls back in love every night.
He enjoys walking on a random city street, looking up at the sky, and shouting about how much he loves this city.
The more he hates the place, the more sentimentally attached he becomes. What a great relationship model.
Natural Habitat: Anywhere around the Orange Line.

Metal Illuminati
Drop the stereotype people, because the heavier the music the more empathetic/thoughtful/nice this guy is.
He tends to be a Geek at work. Youโd love him because heโs made of contrasts: He loves to play Mario Party while drinking beers and, at the other end, his aggressiveness is expressed by the way he dresses and the music he listens to, which means heโs a lover.
If you catch him, he'll love you as much as his guitar. Even more if youโre a keeper.
Natural Habitat: Diaspora is spread around the city. You will find them at these locations hanging out.: Foufounes Electriques, Cafรฉ Chaos, Katakombes on thursdays and saturdays, Profusion (best place to buy metal CD's/vinyl/merch).
Student
From Froshie to Graduate, Montreal is a student city. So students you have them in every color/flavour/style you want. The guy may have moved to Montreal just for school, but he loves the city and the people in it. He is just the right amount of ambitious, cool, and laidback. He works, he studies, he parties. Heโs the one whoโs gonna make you try all the coffee shops in Montreal.
Natural Habitat: MONTREAL itself. With access to six universities and twelve junior colleges we can sure say theyโre everywhere!
Too old but cool? Manther
Society has not embraced the manther as tightly as the cougar, and this guy knows how to take advantage of this situation.
He treats raves as actual music festivals. He secretly practices year round to impress everyone with his moves, his skateboard tricks and his smile. He also has a better understanding of how ravers are in life and is willing to teach you everything he knows about P.L.U.R. (the acronym for "Peace, Love, Unity, Respect/Responsibility).
Heโs got a good corporate job, but refuses to hang out with his contemporaries. His life is all set up and he is very comfortable with it.
Natural Habitat: Old Montreal, Village, Little Burgundy
