12 Montreal Summer Festivals To Go To If You're Broke AF

Montreal is the undisputed festival capital of North America. But often its headliner, internationally renowned events charge a hefty fee for attendance.

Here are some smaller festivals with an affordable price tag.

Fringe Festival

$33 for 3 shows and 3 spectacles
When: May 28th - June 17th
Where: Plateau Mont-Royal

Fringe features more than 800 performances over more than a two-week period. Performances Range from drag, to Shakespeare, to puppetry. You can catch a free show at the Fringe Park and outdoor theatre on the corner of Rue Rachel and Boulevard St-Laurent. Participating restaurants and bars on St-Laurent are also offering discounts. When: June 7th - 17th
Where: Boulevard St-Laurent

Watch artists repaint murals along Boulevard-St-Laurent. Live music and outdoor shops line the street from Sherbrooke Street to Ave. Mont-Royal. Check out the website.

Folk Fest Sur Canal 

$50 for an entire day
When: June 14th - 17th
Where: Lachine Canal

The popular festival returns for its tenth edition this summer at the Esplanade du centenaire. With a day pass visitors can meander among performances and grab a bite at one (or all) of the dozen eateries and bars. You can buy your tickets on the event website.


When: June 21st - July 1st
Where: Quartier des Spectacles

The Elektra festival celebrates visual and digital art. With a range of exhibitions across the Quartier des Spectacles, it has something for every interest. The exhibitions listed on its website are equally strange and mesmerizing.

Montréal Cirque Festival 

$25 (15% off with OPUS card)
When: July 5-15th
Where: Quartier des Spectacles

The city becomes one large stage during the Cirque Festival. Sidewalks and street corners become sites of daring acrobatic and artistic feats. Performances are centered in the Quartier des Spectacles but spread throughout the downtown. Check out the website.

Montreal Pride 

Where: Montreal Gay Village
When: August 9-19th

Montreal Pride is open to queer people and allies alike. Celebrate queer culture in the city by watching the parade, catching a drag show, or visiting one of the dozens of bars and theatres in the Gay Village. The festival website promises hundreds of attractions in the 10-day period.

Festival MEG 

When: August 30th - September 2nd
Where: Boulevard St-Laurent

The Montreal Electronic Groove is an electronic music festival with a line-up of hundreds of artists. The 20th anniversary edition this year spreads across the city. Specific locations are forthcoming on the festival website.

Festival Mode & Design

Where: Quartier des Spectacles
When: August 21st - 25th

This fashion and design festival in the Quartier des Spectacles includes shows, exhibits, and dozens of pop-up shops that are free to explore. Check out the latest trends and innovations and maybe even discover a new design idea. The website is a visual feast.

International Fireworks Festival

When: July 7th - August 8th
Where: La Ronde

The fireworks festival at La Ronde is also visible for free from the Old Port and Parc Jean-Drapeau. Otherwise, tickets cover a day at the amusement park. See the website for photos from previous years.

Food Truck Festival

When: the first Friday of every month this summer
Where: Montreal Olympic Stadium

At the Food Truck Festival you can eat your way through the Olympic Park and visit dozens of unique vendors. The best part is that this festival returns every month. Thousands have said they're going on the facebook event.

International Beer Festival

When: June 6-9th
Where: Montreal Convention Center

This festival features countless vendors and hundreds of types of beer. The event is free to attend and tasting coupons are $1 each according to the website.

Fantasia Film Festival

When: July 12th - August 1st
Where: Downtown

This international film festival has become a world renowned event drawing thousands of people and celebrities. At $11 per film, it's perfect for a film-buff or culture-seeker on a budget. The website continues to add to the 2018 line-up.
