TL;DR At least 20 vehicles, including several 18-wheelers, have been involved in an accident on Quebec's Autoroute 15 southbound in Monteregie. Photos below.

It's clear from the photos below that the highway is going to be closed for the foreseeable future.

The accident took place in Montérégie at kilometre 23 near Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur and has caused a complete shut down of the highway, according to TVA Nouvelles.

This accident is proof that it is mandatory that drivers change their driving habits when weather gets extreme.

With high westerly winds reaching at least 80/km an hour in Southwestern Quebec,  Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the following areas:

Châteauguay - La Prairie
Longueuil - Varennes
Montréal Island

Wind and blowing snow have the ability to reduce visibility, according to Environment Canada.

The video above, posted yesterday, shows how much water was present on the highway while temperatures were above zero.

So it's no surprise that the highway was iced over when temperatures dropped below zero over night.

Ontario is experiencing intense winds today, too, and there was an even worse accident on their Highway 400 south that involved 70 vehicles.

Be careful out there if you've got to drive. Slow way down - you don't know what you can't see until it's too late.
