20 Things You Should Know Before Dating A Montreal Musician

They're weird. They're misunderstood. They're totally f*cking awesome.
20 Things You Should Know Before Dating A Montreal Musician

Dating a MTL musician (or any musician for that matter) comes with its advantages and disadvantages. The music business is probably one of the most misunderstood industries around, and one of the toughest to crack because there is absolutely no specific formula to success. The following article will allow you a little more insight into our mysterious world. Here are the top 20 things you should know before dating a Montreal musician.

1. The term "Starving Artist" is not a myth

Pursuing a career in the field of music can be quite costly, especially at the beginning of an artist's career. Not only do we do a lot for free for exposure, but production costs and maintenance of our instruments can also eat away at our bank accounts quickly.

2. We're usually the most social people, however we love/crave our alone time

Almost every musician will tell you that we love our "alone time" even more than the average Joe. Instead of catching up on our favourite TV series, we'll use this time to write or perfect our craft.

3. If you piss us off, you'll hear it in a song more often than we'll tell you outright

We may not all be as extreme as Taylor Swift, but many of us see this is as the easiest way to communicate what we're feeling.

4. We're actually the best DJs

One of the key factors to being a great musician is knowing your musical history just as well as you know the current market. In other words, we have an extensive library of amazing oldies and more often than not we'll be the ones introducing you to your new favourite song. You're welcome.

5. We're the best people to have around at a party (or campfire).

I mean hey, who doesn't like a girl/guy who can pick up a six string and have everyone singing along after a few beers? Brownie points for those who know how to play more than just "Wonderwall" or "Smoke on the Water"

6. Like apple has an app for that, we have a song for that

No matter what you're going through, you can almost be guaranteed that we'll be able to send you a song that will take the words right out of your mouth.

7. We listen to music differently than you do

If we're not analyzing every note, we're thinking of ways we could either cover or perform it.

8. If you bring us to karaoke, you'll either love it or hate it

But I mean, it could really go either way...

9.Most of us have developed a sixth sense that easily detects bullish*t

If you know a Montreal Musician, more often than not they'll be able to tell you a few horror stories about phoney managers or shady club owners. It is safe to say that the longer we stay in the business, the better our bullshit radar gets.

10. Music award shows/music docs are our equivalent of your sunday night football

Just like you never miss a hockey game, we never miss a music awards show or a music doc about our favourite band or artist.

11. You will get sick of our original songs

The longer we keep you around, the more likely you are to know every lyric, run, break and chord progression of the songs we write.

12. You will get sick of hearing our original songs about our exes

Hey, just because they aren't about you doesn't mean they aren't good...

13. The "notes" section of our iPhones are usually flooded with lyrics that we've written

And they're probably about you....

14. The "voice notes" section of our iPhones are usually flooded with random melodies/song ideas

Also, Probably about you.

15. Don't be surprised if our schedules are way different than yours

Studio sessions, gigs, and rehearsals can sometimes trickle into the wee hours of the morning. We might only be getting home by the time you're going to work/school.

16. Our schedules and plans can/will change on a whim (and we don't expect you to understand)

Gigs, rehearsals and jam sessions can often happen on the fly or whenever inspiration strikes. Similarly, some musicians are shady/flakey and these things can be cancelled just as quickly as they are planned.

17. We technically never leave the office

Emails, text messages, and phone calls coming in at ungodly hours (especially before a release or show) will occur fairly regularly.

18. We do a lot for free (and we don't expect you to understand)

Nothing in life is free and everyone should know his/her value. Yeah yeah, we know. What you don't understand is that sometimes the exposure we get from doing free gigs or features are worth a hell of a lot more than a cheque for a few hundred dollars.

19. We will almost always put music first

We do love you, but most of us are married to our craft.

20. We get hit on... a lot

Because being a musician is sexy. Period.
