5 Alcohol-Free Ways To Spend A Winter Night In Montreal

Going out and getting hammered is great, don't get me wrong, but some weekends you just need a break. Maybe you have a midterm next week or maybe you just don't want to wait in line at a club in -20 degree weather with barely any clothing on. Contrary to what some people think, there is plenty of other things to do in Montreal if you don't want to go out and get plastered. Here are some ideas on how you can enjoy this city with a clear head.

1. Improv
Going to an improv show is always a hilariously good time. Performers react to comical situations with apparent ease that would make you think you're watching actors recite memorized lines written by Amy Poehler. Montreal Improv is in the heart of the Plateau at 3713 Boulevard St. Laurent #202 just below Avenue des Pins so it's super easy to get to. Montreal Improv has English shows most Thursdays and Fridays for around $8 for a cheap fun night out.
2. Snow shoeing/cross country skiing on the mountain
The concrete jungle of Montreal can be overwhelming sometimes. Snow shoeing and cross country skiing up Mont Royal is the perfect way to (kind of) get out of the city and (kind of) be in nature. It's also a great workout! I guarantee the walk will be worth it once you get to the top. The view of the city is breathtaking with all of the lights glittering. Make sure you wear something reflective (or even a white t-shirt over your jacket) so that other people on the mountain can spot you in the dark. You don't want to be skewered at the end of someone else's cross country ski!
3. Bake holiday cookies
The smell of sugar cookies and gingerbread instantly reminds me of Christmas. One of the great things about winter is that you can eat tons of delicious holiday cookies and not feel bad. You get to pack on the pounds and no one can see the extra jelly rolls under your winter sweater. Who doesn't love staying in a baking/eating holiday goodies?
P.S. If you're looking for inspiration, Michael D'Alimonte can hook you up!
4. Watch a Christmas movie
Curling up with a mug of hot chocolate and a blanket as you log into your Netflix account to watch a movie can be extremely comforting sometimes. During the holidays, you have the advantage of watching feel-good holiday movies you can stream on Netflix. With options such as Elf and Miracle on 34th street, among others on Canadian Netflix, you'll have plenty to watch this holiday season. If you have an IP blocker and can get American Netflix then you're really in business.
5. Go ice skating
Ice skating at the Bonsecours Basin is a great way to be outside and view Montreal in all it's glory. The Old Port is lit up with colorful lights for a stunning effect on the beautiful architecture in the neighborhood. You can bring a date, or rally a group of friends, because it's only $6 to skate on the rink. If it's too expensive for you, there are plenty of free rinks in Montreal.
