Montreal can be a bit dreary in the winter. The snow is dirty, the roads are slushing, and your daily commute takes twice as long because every step you take you slip on ice. That doesn't mean you have to hibernate all winter. There are tons of fun things to do around Montreal so you can take advantage, and maybe even enjoy the winter months.
1. Tubing at Mont Avila
Yes, you can go tubing on Mont Royal, but it's honestly not that great. The hill is short and not all that steep. For some really good tubing, go to Mont Avila. It's less than an hour north from Montreal. They have 23 trails, two of which are steep, and four lifts to bring you back up to the top. For a full day, tubing costs $27. Why would you go to a dinky little hill like Mont Royal when you could have an epic ride on an legit mountain?
2. Montreal Snow Village and Ice Hotel
You can stay in the hotel if you want but you can also just visit the snow village and check out the rooms/bar in the hotel. It's a pretty cool concept that's only in Quebec, Finland, and Norway. The ice hotel is open starting January 3rd.
3. Dogsledding at Mont Tremblant
If you watched Balto as a kid, then you've probably always had a dogsledding fantasy. I know I have. You can make that fantasy a reality by heading on up to Tremblant and going dogsledding for the day. The price starts at $96 for the ultimate winter experience.
4. Snowshoeing Up Mont Orford
Don't think that just because there's snow on the ground you can't go hiking. The hiking trails at Mont Orford turn to snowshoeing trails when the snow falls. There are tons of hikes ranging from 2.5 km to 16 km for all skill levels. If you don't have snowshoes, you can rent a pair at the Le Cerisier Visitors Centre.
5. Indoor Paintball at Arnold Paintball
Paintball is always awesome, no matter what time of year it is. Unfortunately, their outdoor paintball field isn't open in the winter, but their indoor setup is still sick. Their field is set up like an old Wild West town with two story wooden buildings, bridges, a mountain, and a cavern. The regular price is $38.95 (gun included) but drops to $33.95 with a group of 15 or more people. Rally the troops because you need to go.
