Golden, sweet and oh so good for you.
6 Montreal Stores Where You Can Buy Fresh Organic Honey

Photo cred - Food Thinkers

Do you love sitting outside organic coffee shops or eating at vegan restaurants with your friends? Is your fridge filled with the freshest and most organic produce from local farmer’s markets?

Organic is a word that gets tossed around often in food circles, but certified organic honey is rare. Most store brand honeys, such as those ever-present plastic bears (a staple of every childhood I'm sure) is an extremely processed product completely stripped of their benefits. The worst part about processed honey is not what is taken out but what is put in - i.e corn syrup.

This can be found in honey even when the label claims to be 'pure honey'.

Visit some of the following locations and experience the bliss of licking rich, thick organic honey directly from the spoon while encouraging resident artisans and buying local.

1. Les Marchés D'alimentation TAU

4238 Rue Saint-Denis, Montréal, QC H2J 2K8

Tau is recognized for its expertise in the field of natural health. Under a warm atmosphere, Tau allows you to find everything you need for your health under one roof. They focus mostly on high end products for the person that isn't afraid to pay an extra buck or two to get good quality, fair trade products such as their honey - which is natural and certified organic.

2. Alexis Le Gourmand

1405 Rue Saint-Jacques, Montréal, QC H3C 1H2

This industrial-chic, re-modeled store, with its usage of beautiful antique display units, journeys across Quebec in search of local products. All their produce has been meticulously chosen to treat and to help you discover different and new flavours. Their sweet, rich and above all organic honey is a must!

3. Olives Et Café Noir

1109 Rue Beaubien E, Montréal, QC H2S 1T6

This place is probably the best-kept secret in town. It’s a coffee shop with a grocery section attached to it. They carry an array of wholesome, noteworthy products that are local, organic and original. There is a regular exhibit showcasing the works of local artists that you can appreciate while dipping your spoon into their local and organic honey selection.

4. Api Culture Hautes-Laurentide Inc.

111 Rang 2 de Gravel, Ferme-Neuve, Quebec J0W 1C0

How would you like to go right to the source and visit the largest producer of organic honey in North America? Api Culture is a ‘Bee Interpretation Center’ and store that allows its visitors to take appointments throughout the months of June to September to schedule a visit to their bee farm.

Be sure to visit their boutique where you can try other fun, honeyesque delicacies such as honey mustards and certified organic buckwheat honey spice bread. Yummm!

5. Finnegan’s Market

775 Rue Main, Hudson, QC J0P 1H0

To get a taste of an award-winning honey you can head over to Finnegan’s Market and dazzle your taste buds with the delicious taste of Miel McCaig Honey. A visit to their stand will teach you the difference in flavours between early and late summer honey.

You are guaranteed not to leave Finnegan's market with an empty hand or stomach on this short trip outside of the city

6. Alvéole

5425 Rue de Bordeaux, Suite 217, Montréal, QC H2H 2P9

If you’re feeling a little adventurous and would like to be more involved in the honey making process, you’re in luck. Alvéole is a local urban beekeeping group, headquartered in the Plateau, which collaborates with Montrealers to cultivate organic honey.

They will install a colony of honeybees on your roof, balcony or in your yard, take care of all the colony's needs on their visits and then extract an unpasteurized honey without pesticide so that you can dine on an extremely local product.

Don't despair, you will not be spending the rest of the day removing stingers from your entire body - they have trained professionals that will show you the ropes and teach you how to cultivate your own hive.
