A Barrier Had To Be installed In Montreal's Pointe-Claire To Keep Out The Massive Number Of Snakes

Montreal has more than it's fair share of wild animals that cross through the city. You can expect to see deer and coyotes on a somewhat regular basis if you leave the downtown core, and of course there's the typical raccoons that scurry around at night.

But, what if there were hundred of snakes taking over the city and it got so bad actual fences had to be put up to make them go away?

Well, that's basically what's happening right now. A barrier has been put up in Pointe-Claire along highway 40 West to keep out all of the brown snakes that keep slithering onto the construction site of the new REM electric train station.

Because the project requires a bit of digging underground to build the foundation, Montreal's snake population has been taking the opportunity to make a trip to the city. The wooden and cloth barrier was then put up so that no snakes are harmed during the construction of the station, as well as the fact that no one really wants to see a bunch of snakes slither through their neighbourhood.

The barrier is 100 metres away from the highway and 300 metres long, so it looks like the snakes would really have to go above and beyond if they wanted to get into the city.

If construction goes to plan, a solid foundation "wall" will be built for the station but also in place of the flimsy barrier they have now for the snakes. Thankfully, the new foundation will keep snakes out of Montreal indefinitely.

For now, it looks like the problem was solved by simply putting up a cloth barrier. Let's hope it continues to work, as construction on the REM station in Pointe-Claire doesn't end until 2023.
