A Complete Timeline Of All The Hilariously Stupid Things Trump Said About Canada In 2018
Trump has opinions on everything. So it's no surprise that he has voiced his thoughts on our dear nation once or twice.
These are some of the stupidest things Trump has said about Canada or Trudeau during his last, tumultuous year as President.
TL;DR Here are some highlights of all the stupid stuff Trump said about Canada and Trudeau this year.
Trump started out his year in typical fashion, bragging about the power and size of his... nuclear detonator.
North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!
To which he recieved some expected responses:
Trump go see a psychiatrist
However, Canada didn't enter the Trump Tweetstorm until March.
The BBC reported that Trump admitted his claim of an American trade deficit with Canada was straight bluffing. When he and Trudeau got together he insisted on a trade defecit... and then asked one of his guys to look it up... after he had already stated it as fact.
"I didn't even know,"he said, "I had no idea."
However, that didn't stop him from sticking to it his claims with this terribly sourced tweet:
We do have a Trade Deficit with Canada, as we do with almost all countries (some of them massive). P.M. Justin Trudeau of Canada, a very good guy, doesn’t like saying that Canada has a Surplus vs. the U.S.(negotiating), but they do...they almost all do...and that’s how I know!
Throughout April, Canada was exempt from tariffs on steel and aluminum, along with Mexico and the EU, while NAFTA talks continued.
Then, in May,Trump apparently made a quip to Justin Trudeau, on a private call between the two leaders, asking whether or not Canada burned down the White House in the War of 1812. This was in response to Trudeau's questioning of trade tariffs that Trump imposed for reasons of "national security."
The next month, Trump put a 25% tariff for steel and 10% for aluminum on all Canadian imports that he claimed would protect domestic producers who are vital to the "national security" of the country.
Then Trump took to Twitter with the tweet below. This was in response to Trudeau speaking out about steep steel and aluminum tariffs that were put on Canada just days after the 1812 discussion.
Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the U.S. and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things...but he doesn’t bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy — hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!
The next day was the G7 summit. It is considered an informal meeting for the leaders to come together and discuss the global community they help run.
The discussions happen behind closed doors, but Trudeau spoke out against what he felt were unfair tariffs from the U.S.
Trump, of course, took to Twitter to to share his two cents:
PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!
He continued to rant and rave about dairy — but at least in these tweets he has uninflated the tariff percentage down from 300% to 270%...
Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal. According to a Canada release, they make almost 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with U.S. (guess they were bragging and got caught!). Minimum is 17B. Tax Dairy from us at 270%. Then Justin acts hurt when called out!
The NAFTA talks continued into August, and people started to get antsy. Trudeau and the Canadian government were positive as ever and on the 27th a statement explained that a "constructive conversation" was had between Trump and Trudeau and that the two leaders were excited to find a "successful conclusion" to negotiations.
Then Trump happened.
In a leaked off-the-record statement to Bloomberg news, Trump had to go and toot his own horn, saying:
“Off the record, Canada’s working their ass off. And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala,” Trump said.
The Impala is a car made in Ontario at the General Motors plant in Oshawa.
While these cruel and bullying comments were made off-the-record, they leaked to the Toronto Star and were published for the world to see.
Once the cat was out of the bag, Trump must have decided he had nothing to lose and went off again on Twitter:
There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off...
Like a child that realizes they've been too mean and they might actually get a time-out, he came back to say:
I love Canada, but they’ve taken advantage of our Country for many years!
He also took an opportunity to diss our military and imply that we have less to offer in terms of trade than our neighbours to the south...
We shouldn’t have to buy our friends with bad Trade Deals and Free Military Protection!
Finally, by the beginning of October, Trump and Trudeau reached an agreement...
A good day for Canada & our closest trading partners. More tomorrow... https://t.co/qOowhvYW2B
Trump made his own announcement as well:
Late last night, our deadline, we reached a wonderful new Trade Deal with Canada, to be added into the deal already reached with Mexico. The new name will be The United States Mexico Canada Agreement, or USMCA. It is a great deal for all three countries, solves the many......
Though not everyone was as positive about the outcome as the two leaders...
ALL YOU DID WAS CHANGE THE NAME
I though NAFTA was the " single worst deal" ever negotiated? https://t.co/b4zVjss63c
November saw the midterm elections in the States, so understandably any beef with Canada or Trudeau saw the backseat.
However, there was time to have talks with China...
Just had a long and very good conversation with President Xi Jinping of China. We talked about many subjects, with a heavy emphasis on Trade. Those discussions are moving along nicely with meetings being scheduled at the G-20 in Argentina. Also had good discussion on North Korea!
He obviously thinks he's pretty funny with this one...
What is unclear now, is how these tariffs, the warrant for Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, and the trade war truce between China and the U.S. will impact Canada.
Webroke downthe Canada-China conflict earlier this month, and what we know so far is that Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on December 1, just after a truce between the U.S. and China was reached.
Canada and the U.S. have a longstanding extridition treaty so while the courts will decide if Wanzhou will be extradited to the States to face the charges against her, Canada was certainly required to co-operate with the U.S. Department of Justice in handing over a suspect of such crimes.
The result was the detention of three Canadians in China, arrests that certainly seem retalitory in nature.
The dynamics of this issue are:
China just announced that their economy is growing much slower than anticipated because of our Trade War with them. They have just suspended U.S. Tariff Hikes. U.S. is doing very well. China wants to make a big and very comprehensive deal. It could happen, and rather soon!
All this to say that Trump may be using Canada as a pawn in ongoing negotiations with China.
While Trump didn't take to Twitter to address the arrest, he did speak of American involvement in a very roundabout way, below:
Good to know Trumpis thinking about the big picture here — what he can get out of the arrest for the U.S. and its trade. Of course, there was no mention of the Canadian citizens.
The year isn't quite over yet and with a government shutdown looming, I may just have to update this timeline before the New Year....
