A Record Number Of Americans Want To Flee The U.S. And Move To Canada

Since Donald Trump took office, the number of Americans who wish to get out of the United States has undoubtedly increased. Hundreds if not thousands of Americans have taken to social media in recent years to express their desire to leave their troubled country.

But a recent poll sheds new light on just how many Americans feel strongly compelled to quit the U.S.

According to the Gallup's World Poll, 16% of Americans surveyed in 2017 and 2018 said that they would like to leave America permanently. Under presidents George W. Bush and Obama, by comparison, that percentage hovered around 10%.

TL;DR A record number of young women – 40% – assert that they wish to leave the U.S. permanently. Only 20% of men within the same age group feel the same way. Moreover, 1 out of 4 individuals wishing to leave the U.S. list Canada as their top destination.

A unsettling trend begins to stand-out when looking at the poll results: a gender gap is at play.

In short, regardless of age groups, women feel more strongly about leaving the the U.S. than men.

Specifically, 1 and 5 women – that's 20% – said they would move to another country permanently if they could. This is twice the number of women who claimed they would have liked to move to another country during the Obama and Bush administrations.

When looking at younger women under 30, the gender gap becomes even wider!

A whooping 40% of women in that age group say they would like to move; compared to only 20% of similarly aged men — that's double the amount!

Record numbers of Americans have wanted to leave the U.S. since Donald Trump became president, including 40% of women younger than 30.

So where do people want to go? Canada, of course!

In 2018, more than one in four Americans (26%) who would like to move named Canada as the place they would like to go. That percentage is also the highest it has been in recent years.

Although the results of the poll are clear (that many American wish to leave the U.S.), there is a big difference between a desire to do something, and actually doing it.

In other words, even though many Americans wish to leave, it doesn't mean that Canada should be anticipating a mass migration.
