Adult Coloring Books: Everything You Need To Know But Were Too Afraid To Ask

Don't worry, you're not the only one with questions.
Adult Coloring Books: Everything You Need To Know But Were Too Afraid To Ask

Are you guys wondering WHAT IS UP with this adult colouring book trend? How has this become a thing and why did it come about? Why are so many people getting back into their pencil crayon and/or marker collections, and why now? If you’re anything like me (i.e. a huge nerd), you’re wondering what the psychological meaning of it all is, and why are you so intrigued by it!?

To answer those questions, I wanted to know if there was actually any scientific research done on the subject of adult colouring books and found an article titled “The Therapeutic Science Of Adult Coloring Books: How This Childhood Pastime Helps Adults Relieve Stress” by Dana Dovey. I discovered that Art Therapy is actually used in medical treatment and that it has some pretty amazing benefits. While it obviously isn’t able to cure any diseases, one study found that art therapy helped to significantly decrease symptoms of physical and emotional distress during cancer treatment. Clearly, these results can be reflected onto the general public as well. Who WOULDN’T benefit from being less stressed out!?

Well, here’s what I think: People are creative by nature. We have wild imaginations, some more than others, and we need an outlet to express this in order to keep ourselves sane. However, not all of us are gifted in the visual arts. Colouring books allow us to be creative without having to actually paint a picture ourselves – all we have to do is colour in the lines, and if you’re lucky enough to own a box of 64+ different colours, the possibilities are seemingly endless. Isn’t there also something so satisfying about “staying in the lines”? It’s basically a practice of meditation in and of itself to be able to focus on the moment and to not screw the whole thing up. Sounds like life in general if you ask me.
