After Last KFC In Quebec City Closes, Company Plans To Expand Across Province

The closure of the last KFC location in Quebec City shook the Quebec media landscape on Monday, worrying consumers who have seen a steady decline in the number of restaurants in the province. According to reports, employees at the KFC (or PFK, in Quebec) franchise on boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel were notified Sunday of the sudden closure of their workplace, concluding what appeared to be a slow retreat from the capital for the popular American fast-food chain.

News of the closure quickly elicited strong public reactions regarding the manner in which employees were informed, as well as the future of the restaurant in the province, including the handful in the Montreal area.

In a statement to MTL Blog, KFC Canada Director of Development, Jamie Hood, explained that “we have made the decision to close this restaurant in Quebec City in an effort to revitalize the KFC brand."

"This closure is in no way a reflection of the dedication and contributions of our valued team members, rather part of a broader strategy to modernize our brand and to continue delivering the exceptional service our customers have come to know and expect from us."

Hood further reassured that KFC will maintain its presence in Quebec and even has plans to expand:

"Regarding our future plans for the Quebec market, we are still committed to serving the world’s best tasting chicken."

"We are currently in the process of re-franchising, and our new Franchise Partner is aiming to open 10-15 new restaurants across the province in the next several years."

Existing KFC locations are also in for a facelift. The new partner, says Hood, "will also be investing a significant amount of capital in renovations and upgrades on existing assets across the same timeframe.”

KFC will face mounting competition in the province, however.

A spokesperson for Filipino chain Jollibee told MTL Blog that the company plans to open its first Quebec location in the coming years.

Taiwanese purveyor of fried chicken, Hot-Star, is also set to open its second Montreal Island location in spring 2020.

Stay tuned for more fast-food news.
