Having a drink at bar on a busy night can get pretty chaotic. Getting the waiter's attention is hard enough, and getting them to bring over their little interact machine so you can pay your bill can take a pretty long time. Luckily you only have to do that once at the end of the night though right?
Well not anymore. Now that they're done going after restaurants, Revenue Quebec is turning its attention towards Quebec's bars. They claim that over $76 million gets lost every year in undeclared taxes. That's why starting today (Wednesday, September 2nd), all bars will be equipped with machines that keep track of drink sales and the bar owner will have to cover part of the cost of installation.
Bar owners are understandably pissed off. Paying for something you don't want really sucks, and their employees are busy enough as it is, so giving out one bill per drink would be very complicated. The president of the Union of Quebec's bar believes that the people who came up with these laws obviously have no idea how a bar operates.
Revenue Quebec says that their next target might be the taxi industry.
