Ah, Saint-Laurent street. Spanning from Ahuntsic to Old Montreal, Saint-Laurent is one of the biggest and most important arteries in Montreal. No matter how long you've been in the city, the chances are very high that you've had an encounter with Saint-Laurent at least once.
And chances are that you've noticed all the restaurants lining this popular street, too. While it's no secret that Montreal's Saint-Laurent street is full of amazing places to eat, it can be a little confusing to navigate them; especially if you're new to the city. And, if you are having a hard time deciding which Saint-Laurent spot to grab a bite at, then worry not. That's what I'm here for. Read on for 20 Restaurants To Go To On Montreal's Saint-Laurent Street 2016.
1. Pho 99 Chabanel
I've shown Pho 99 some love in the past, but their food is so delicious that they honestly deserve another shoutout. Located in Ahuntsic, this spot features fresh and tasty pho dishes, with complex, flavourful broths, tender meats, and crisp veggies, making it not only one of the best restaurants on Saint-Laurent Street, but one of the best pho restaurants in Montreal, too.
2. Sel Gras
Seriously, Sel Gras is amazing. The vibe here is super welcoming, friendly, and chic, making it pretty much the perfect spot for a date, or a get together, or pretty much anything, really. And the food? Yeah. Pretty much life changing, friends. Their menu features traditional dishes with modern twists - such as brandy and honey glazed chorizo, or miso marinated black cod - made with super fresh and high quality ingredients. Meaning that whatever dish you choose to indulge in, it's going to be amazing. Oh, and bonus points for being open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, meaning that whenever the craving for Sel Gras hits (always, tbh), they've got you covered.
If you haven't tasted the delights at Majestique yet, then stop what you're doing right now, and get yourself there. I'm being totally serious. First of all, Majestique is home to the famous 12 inch hot dog, which is less like a hot dog and more like an actual work of art, TBH. This hot dog could inspire symphonies, friends; but if you're not the hot dog type of person, then don't worry. Majestique's menu is full of contemporary, flavourful dishes, that'll have you literally hooked after your first bite. Fans of food, you need to go there - ASAP.
If you like dumplings, then you're going to love Trilogie. This Villeray spot has a concise menu, which pretty much means that they've perfected every single item on it - and trust, it totally shows. Their dumplings are everything that perfect dumplings should be: incredibly yummy and fresh, with moist, perfectly cooked dumpling skin and a hearty, complex, tasty filling. It should be noted that awesome spot is only open on weekdays from 11:00-3:00; but honestly, it doesn't matter. It could be open for ten minutes at 4:00 in the morning and you'd still be 100% down to go there. It's seriously just that amazing.
Okay, I'm sure you guys all know about my complete obsession with Fortune tacos. But, honestly, what can I say? These tacos are amazing. Fresh and bursting with flavour, the tacos at Fortune feature delicious fillings piled high on fresh and homemade tortillas - and although they have six different taco choices for you, my own personal favourite has to be their beer chicken tacos. It doesn't matter what you choose to eat at Fortune, though, because everything is seriously, seriously fantastic.
6. Bouillon Bilk
Friends, only one word comes to mind when describing Bouillon Bilk: Beautiful. Everything in this restaurant is seriously gorgeous; its decor, the way the food is plated, even the food itself somehow manages to be incredibly pleasing to look at. The only thing more beautiful than the way the food looks? The way it tastes. It's very clear that everything here is made with high quality ingredients, fashioned into some seriously impressive and tasty dishes - such as their beef, calamari and harissa plate, or their scallops with cauliflower and hazelnut butter. Sound awesome? You know it does.
Confession: I'm really, really obsessed with this Montreal Chinatown restaurant. It's my go-to spot whenever I'm in the area, and for one very good reason - the food is seriously out of this world. The noodles are hand-pulled and unmistakably fresh, with the perfect chewy-yet-firm constancy. If you pick one of their soups, then you're in for a good time: The broth is bursting with complex and delicious flavour, served piping hot, and the perfect compliment to their noodles. And if you're going for a dry dish? Prepare to turn into the actual heart eyes emoji, friends. Their dry dishes feature their signature noodles topped with fresh and tasty vegetables, meats, and other toppings, allowing for every single flavour to shine through. All the yums? All the yums.
Alright, straight up, the brunch here is mind blowing. Their menu is full of classic options that are still super unique, such as a breakfast banh-mi sandwich and a steak and egg dish featuring chimichurri - meaning that when you're at Sparrow, you'll be dining on something much better than the ordinary. My personal fave? Their buckwheat pancakes featuring apple butter and walnuts. Perfectly cooked, moist pancakes; apple butter that's flavoured to perfection and not overly sweet; and delicious walnuts to reign it all in. But honestly, with delicious ingredients featured in all of their dishes, it doesn't matter what you pick - you won't go wrong at all.
9. Aux Vivres
Lovers of vegan food, rejoice. Aux Vivres has been pretty much synonymous with "awesome Montreal vegan food" for a while now, and for a few very good reasons. First of all, their menu is hugely varied, featuring tons of delicious vegan dishes - like their vegan cheesecake, their BLT Sandwich, featuring bacon flavoured coconut, and their ever famous "Dragon Bowl". When you wrap that all together with their super fair prices, their welcoming and casual vibe, and the fact that they deliver, what do you get? You get your newest favourite spot, friends. That's what you get.
10. Patati Patata
If you're searching for great poutines on Saint-Laurent Street, stop the search. It's over. You've found Patati Patata. This spot has a reputation for serving up some of the most awesome poutines in Montreal, and one bite of their signature dish will tell you exactly why. Perfectly fresh and crisp fries bathed in tasty poutine sauce and smothered in fresh, squeaky cheese? Yeah, I'm totally there for that. Lovers of poutine - or lovers of food in general, TBH - get yourselves here, ASAP.
11. Main Deli
If you've ever passed through this stretch of Saint-Laurent Street without going into the Main Deli, then you've been missing out - big time. The juicy, tender, and flavourful smoked meat here is among the top in the city; but this spot also offers a bunch of other dishes that are just as perfectly prepared. Case in point? The Main Burger, served with pickles, dijon mustard, and a slab of their succulent smoked meat.
12. Bagel Etc
Straight up, Bagel Etc has been changing up the breakfast game in Montreal for years. This spot is what I strongly consider to be a Montreal institution - so if you haven't been there, then you now know exactly where your next breakfast meal is coming from. Protip? Their huevos rancheros (served on a bagel, much like the majority of their dishes) are a thing of pure beauty, with bold, savoury, and eloquent flavours mixing together to create one seriously amazing dish.
True talk, I'm actually obsessed with Braseiro. This spot not only serves up some of the most flavourful and moist Portuguese chicken you've ever tasted, but their other authentic Portuguese dishes are out of this world amazing. My own personal favourite is their "Bitoque", a traditional Portuguese-style steak served with an egg on top - but every single thing I've tasted on their menu has impressed me to no end. Get yourselves there ASAP, friends, and thank me later.
Alright, who here loves delicious Indian food? Everyone? Great. Because if you do, then you're going to absolutely adore Atma. This Saint-Laurent Indian restaurant boasts extremely delicious, fresh, authentic Indian fare - and although their food is absolutely outstanding, their decor will blow you away. Honestly, friends, if you're looking for an authentic and amazing Indian spot, stop looking. You've found your place.
If you're looking for a spot that uses fresh and high-quality ingredients, boasts a seriously original menu (pulled pork Benedict, holla at me), and a trendy and welcoming atmosphere, then look no further. Pastaga has got your back. Often hailed as being one of the most awesome places to eat at in Montreal - not just on Saint-Laurent Street - this eatery has seriously got the whole package, making it a no-brainer for your next dinner pick.
This Saint-Laurent spot is a classic in Montreal - and honestly, I am of the belief that every single person in Montreal should try this place at least once in their lives. Although, honestly, if you try it once, that's it. You're hooked on their juicy, succulent, high-quality steaks for life. Oh, not a fan of steak? Don't worry. Moishes offers a pretty varied menu - that includes fish, seafood, and lamb - so that no matter what you're down for, chances are, Moishes has got you covered.
This Saint-Laurent restaurant showcases traditional English dishes, and is seriously one of the best places you can choose to eat at. No joke. First of all, the ingredients they use here are incredibly high quality, meaning that everything you eat is going to pretty much taste delicious. But the dishes themselves? Yeah, amazing - and incredibly unique. Where else in the city can you find a mouthwatering medley of bream, clams and hollandaise sauce? Or a seriously delicious breakfast consisting of scrapple, fried eggs, and bacon? Nowhere but Lawrence, friends, and they do it up so, so good.
Honestly, I don't even know where to start with this Asian fusion spot. First of all, it manages to strike the perfect balance between trendy, fun, and intimate, making it a great restaurant to go with friends, for a celebration, or even on a date. But what really makes this restaurant shine? Its mind blowing dishes. Featuring ramen, Japanese tapas, and Asian fusion inspired dishes, this spot has a varied menu, and executes each and every one of their dishes with passion and quality - which basically means that everything you're eating is going to be, in a word, amazing.
19. Portus Calle
Fans of Portuguese food, I've got some awesome news. You've just found your brand new favourite spot. Portus Calle hits the nail on the head when it comes to delicious Portuguese food, offering an extensive and varied menu full of Portuguese delights (such as their Portuguese-style sirloin steak with chourico and potatoes, which will actually bring foodie tears of joy to your eyes the second you taste it), a warm and friendly atmosphere (new date spot found?), and an all around amazing dining experience. Get yourselves there now, and thank me later.
It doesn't matter if you've been in Montreal for your whole life, or if this is your first day in the city - the chances are very high that you know about Schwartz's Deli. This classic and insanely popular smoked meat spot is a staple on Saint-Laurent, characterized by its vintage sign and immense lineup. But, friends, brave the lineup. Trust me, it's worth it. The smoked meat sandwiches here totally deserve their popularity: Juicy, moist, and flavourful chunks of meat are stacked high in between two tasty slices of bread, making for the sort of food euphoria that can only be found at Schwartz's.
