Best Montreal Bagel Shops 2016

Get the cream cheese ready.

Is there anything in life better than a bagel? Well, yes, actually: a Montreal bagel. Okay, fine, there might be some people out there who actually prefer New York style bagels. But those people are not me, friends, and I don't think those people have their priorities in order, TBH.

Okay, all jokes aside, Montreal bagels are the best. Hands down. No competition. And luckily for those of us who live in this magnificent city, Montreal bagels are available pretty much everywhere, at any time. Of course, there are a select few that stand out. Read on for the Best Montreal Bagels 2016.

1. St-Viateur

263 Rue Saint Viateur O

How do you even describe the euphoria that is St-Viateur? I could go on about how fresh, crispy and flavourful the bagels are over here for days and days. But, for your sake, I'll stop myself. All you really need to know about this Montreal institution is that the bagels are amazing: super moist, slightly dense, bursting with that iconic Montreal bagel flavour, and just as delicious un-toasted as they are served up crispy. Yum? Yum.

2. Fairmount

74 Avenue Fairmount O

Possibly the oldest bagel joint in the city, Fairmount has been doing up these delights right for generations. For those of you who don't know, the whole St-Viateur VS. Fairmount debate is a hugely polarizing topic among most people in the city, but let me tell you straight up that they're both amazing. Fairmount, like St-Viateur, serves up freshly made, authentic Montreal bagels that are doughy, crispy morsels of pure delight. But Fairmount's bagels have a sweeter, fluffier twist to them, making them the prime choice for a good chunk of Montrealers. Personally, I won't say which I like more - but I will say that they're both seriously legit, and seriously delicious, in their own different ways.

3. REAL Bagel

6647 Boulevard Décarie

OMG. First of all, I'm just going to straight up tell you guys that I have an irrational love for any food in mini format, so when I tried REAL Bagel's mini bagels, I cried real foodie tears. Not only were they adorable, but they were delicious, too: fresh, perfectly doughy, with that oh-so familiar sweet, yummy bagel crust. No worries if you're not into mini versions of your favourite foods, though, because their regular sized bagels? Just as euphoric. Major bonus points for having pretty much every flavour of bagel you can dream of.  Coconut bagels? Count me in.

4. Beaubien Bagel

828 Rue Beaubien E

Known for perfuming the air around it with that iconic wood burning bagel oven smell, Beaubien Bagel is quite possibly the perfect bagel spot for anyone in the immediate area. Beaubien's creations serve up iconic Montreal style bagels, much like all the other places on this list. Except that these are known to be just a little crispier, just a little fluffier, and supremely delicious when served fresh out of their oven.

5. Bagel Etc

4320 Boul St-Laurent

Okay, imagine your favourite brunch dish. Are you imagining? Good. Now replace whatever carb makes an appearance - looking at you, English muffins with my Eggs Benedict - with a bagel. Yes. A legit bagel. I know, I know, that level of sheer beauty is a little difficult to imagine. Thankfully, you won't have to picture it with your mind's eye: this is an everyday reality at Bagel Etc. Think delicious, perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict, smothered in creamy Hollandaise and plopped on top of a bagel. Think bacon, potatoes, eggs, and a fresh bagel to accompany your dish. Alright, now stop thinking, and straight up get yourself there.

6. Mount Royal Bagel Bakery

709 Chemin Lucerne

Okay, it goes without saying that these bagels are awesome. Seriously. They're homemade, a little more plump than usual, but deliciously dense, crispy, and fresh. Although one bagel alone is enough to steal the show - looking at you, vegan flax bagel - you really haven't lived until you've tried it with one of their homemade cream cheeses. Smoked salmon cream cheese on a fresh, yummy bagel; is there anything more perfect?

7. Bagels On Greene

4160 Rue Ste-Catherine O

Bagels on Greene is another popular spot in the city, and for one very good reason: their bagels are a thing of beauty. Flavourful, fresh, and deliciously chewy, these delights can even come piled high with your favourite toppings (S/O to their bagel with lox). And while their bagels are clearly a show-stealer, Bagels on Greene serves up a wide variety of other delicious food, too, including Indian dishes and vegan options. Which means that even your non-bagel loving friends can tag along and enjoy a good meal as you down 4 bagels in a row. (Just kidding. There's no such thing as someone who doesn't love bagels.)

9. Brossard Bagels

286 Rue Gladstone

Okay, I might be getting a bit too dramatic over here, but Brossard Bagels is a legit blessing. This bagel shop delivers some seriously fresh and delicious homemade bagels- and they score serious bonus points for their super warm, homey atmosphere, and the supremely fair prices. The best part? Brossard Bagels is located in the South Shore, which means that our South Shore friends don't have to travel very far to get legit Montreal bagels. And, of course, it's a perfect reason to visit the South for those of us who live on-Island.

11. Ville-Émard Bagels

6556 Boulevard Monk

A relatively new contender on Montreal's bagel scene, Ville-Émard Bagels has proved itself to be the go-to place for people craving bagels in Montreal's Sud-Ouest. Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you. The bagels at Ville-Émard are authentic, legit Montreal-style bagels, holding all the hallmarks of the quintessential doughy delight: fresh, crispy, chewy, and, in  a word, delicious.
