Alright Montreal, we told you where you can wine & dine your special someone - now we're here to tell you what else you can do to make this the best Valentine's Day that your cuddle bug will ever have. Our city has so many unique date options and it's time we took advantage of them. Better take notes!
Spa Day for Two
You and your favorite heartthrob might want to just pamper yourselves silly this Valentine's Day and, as usual, Montreal's spas do not disappoint. Bota Bota, our very own spa on the water, offers an incredibly luxurious Valentine's package which can include, among other things, a couples massage accompanied by a live harp concert. Rainspa offers many different Valentine's options to impress your sweetheart including hammam treatments, followed by a romantic dinner which, if you're lucky, could turn into breakfast in bed the next day.
Carriage Ride in Old MTL
This one is a Montreal classic. Horse-drawn carriage rides last from 30-60 minutes and, despite the rom-com cliche of it all, will dazzle nearly everyone. The old world charm of riding through Old Montreal's cobblestone roads, cuddled up against the person you love, under a warm blanket and with a thermos of hot chocolate, on Valentine's Day is just about too cute and perfect to deal with. If it starts lightly snowing while you're on your carriage ride, you may as well just propose right then and there - you'll never top that.
Snowshoeing or Dog Sledding
Now, you can go snowshoeing any old day of the week in Montreal (seriously!). On Valentine's Day, not only do you get to snowshoe.. you also get mulled wine and chocolate truffles to share with your special someone. Les Amis de la Montagne will guide you through Mount Royal's many trails for an evening of new discoveries. A little bit romantic, a little bit adventurous and just the right amount of "let's get close so we can stay warm" - sounds like the perfect recipe for this Valentine's Day.
Head over to Parc Jean-Drapeau if you and your partner are more adventures than romantic. Dog sledding rides will get your adrenaline pumping as twenty huskies pull you through a beautiful wintry wonderland. For dog lovers, the VIP package gives you access to the kennel and the pack, all while learning about harnessing and riding.
That's right - dinner shows. Bet you didn't know we had any in Montreal, right? For those who don't know, a dinner show means that you get a full evening - a delicious, sumptuous dinner during, or followed by, a performance of some kind. The Rialto is holding its monthly Pasta Opera on February 14th and it will be Valentine's themed; authentic Italian cuisine (just looking at the menu makes my mouth water) accompanied by operatic arias and popular songs performed by none other than the chef himself!
If you're not a huge fan of opera-singing Italian chefs, but still want to try this whole dinner show thing, head over to Le Balcon for their Love Gives You Wings show. A tribute to all of your favorite crooners - Sinatra, Martin, Cole - this show will definitely put you in the mood for some old-school love that will have you flyin' to the moon, among other things.
Do you love to dance? Tear up the dance floor with your better half at any of Montreal's dance clubs. Take it one step further by hitting one of Montreal's tango and salsa venues, like Salsatheque or Tango Social Club. Don't know how to dance? Sign up for a beginner's course with your partner on Valentine's Day - you'll learn all about each other's bodies and how you can move better together, all while listening to the world's most sensual, erotic music. After all, that's pretty much the point of Valentine's Day, right?
Hotel (aka, a boy's favorite Valentine's Day gift)
A favorite - and a no-brainer - for many couples on Valentine's Day. Many of Montreal's hotels offer Valentine's packages so you can spend the night seducing and enticing your beloved. Everything from chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne at the Ritz-Carlton to a dozen roses and in-room breakfast at the Queen E - if you can think it, then a Montreal hotel is already doing it. We really are spoiled by this great city, aren't we?
Valentine's Day at Comedy Works
Nothing gets people to relax and enjoy each other's company like a few drinks and a lot of laughter. Spend the evening with the (current) love of your life and comedian Keith Alberstadt at Montreal Comedy Works. You'll drink, you'll laugh, you'll drink some more - only great things could come out of a night like this.
As most Montrealers know, our city has its fair share of theaters and performance spaces. Why not do something a little different and explore one of these options with your loved one? The Segal Center is currently showing The Seagull - originally an Anton Chekhov play, but don't let that scare you away. This is the tale of a lakeshore chalet, a dysfunctional family and the things that happen when seasons change. Grab a glass of wine (or two) and cuddle up to your honey for this brilliant play.
In the mood for something a little more existential? Check out Centaur Theatre's The Book of Bob; it is a modern, witty retelling of the Book of Job (y'know... from the Bible). First of all, God is female. Second of all, Bob is a middle-aged McGill University professor. How could you not see this? Though it may not be the most romantic play, if your special someone's perfect date includes long debates about the existence of a higher being, then this is the date for you.
Montreal can never just be laid-back for a night - even on Valentine's Day, the city's music scene is non-stop, from rock to classical and everything in between. Want to dive headfirst into a mosh pit with the one you love? Check out Down With Webster - one of this month's must-see shows - at the Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre. In the mood to don something a little more elegant and appreciate the classics? The Arion Baroque Orchestra brings you Love Duets, an exploration of tumultuous love affairs, passion and romance. Are you and your soul mate more of the neon-wearing, rave-loving couple? Don't miss Dubfire at New City Gas this Friday. Whatever your musical craving, Montreal can and will satisfy.
If All Else Fails...
If none of these ideas work for you, don't you fret. Pick up a bottle of wine, flowers and your main squeeze's favorite movie. Lay out a blanket on the living room floor, picnic style, order from your favorite delivery place and, for a final touch, light some candles. Voila! The perfect romantic and cozy date for Valentine's Day!
