Best Montreal Portuguese Chicken Restaurants 2016
And other authentic dishes, too.
Friends, Montreal is known to be a very multicultural city. And what happens when you combine a bunch of awesome cultures into one beautiful metropolitan area? Great things. And great food.
Portuguese chicken is a staple of every Montrealer's diet (okay, maybe not, but I firmly believe that it should be), and for very good reason: it's freaking amazing. Seriously. Steaming hot chicken, crispy, flavorful skin, just the right amount of spice... I'm making myself hungry just thinking about it. Luckily for us, Montreal is full of wonderful establishments that serve this delicious dish to us. There are a key few that stand out, though. Read on for Best Montreal Portuguese Chicken Restaurants 2016.
If I could write music, I'd write a whole symphony about Braseiro. No joke. If you're a fan of any Portuguese dish - chicken, pork, seafood, chorizo, whatever - then you absolutely have to visit Braseiro, and feel confident in the knowledge that they do every single dish up right. My personal favourite is the Bitoque, a Portuguese style steak, seasoned and cooked to perfection with a fried egg on top. But if I'm being honest, there isn't one thing on the menu I wouldn't devour with rapturous glee. Get there, my friends. Just trust me.
2. Casa Vinho
Okay, let me just say this: yum. This Portuguese restaurant serves up some seriously legit, authentic dishes. Their chicken? Amazing. But don't let that stop you from branching out and trying other things, because trust, their other menu options are just as delicious as their chicken. In particular, their calamari are among the best I've tried: perfectly battered, crispy, fresh, and oh-so flavourful. Casa Vinho is located in Rosemont, too, and their cozy, homey vibe makes this place the perfect neighbourhood eatery.
3. O Cantinho
Alright, straight up, the food at O Cantinho is out of this world. Located just outside of St. Leonard, in the St.Michel/Villeray area, this Portuguese eatery might be a little out of the way for some of us. But trust me: the trek out here is more than worth it. Their menu boasts more traditional, authentic portuguese dishes, like grilled squid and cod; and while these options are mouthwateringly amazing, their chicken really stands out. It's moist, perfectly spiced, and bursting with that oh-so delicious Portuguese chicken flavour. Run there now, and thank me later.
4. Ma Poule Mouille
We've given Ma Poule Mouille a lot of love, and for one very good reason: it is literally amazing. It's the embodiment of amazing. Their chicken is perfectly charred, perfectly cooked, and perfectly flavoured. And to make things even better? If you want them to, they'll chop up all this chicken-y goodness, and stick it into a poutine. Yeah. No joke. Of course, this magical poutine also features pieces of their chorizo - which, of course, is equally amazing, meaning that no matter what you get at MPM, you're going to have a good time.
Romados is pretty much the gold standard of Portuguese chicken in Montreal. Seriously, if you haven't tried Romados at this stage in the game... yeah, stop everything that you're doing, and get yourself there. Immediately. Only then will you know the euphoric experience that is Romados Portuguese chicken: crispy on the outside, oh-so moist and juicy on the inside, and slathered with as much of their signature sauce as you want. Is there anything better, friends? (The correct answer is no, friends. There is nothing better.)
Real talk, guys, Portugalia is mindblowing. While their chicken is clearly the star of the show - crisp, moist, and flavourful? Check, check, and check - their other Portuguese dishes are equally mouthwatering. Especially their chorizo: smoky, juicy, and just out of this world. Scratch that, actually. All of their food is completely out of this world. All the yums, friends. All the yums.
7. Les 3 Maria
OMG. So, so delicious. The chicken at Les 3 Maria is as close to perfection as you can get, to be honest: crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and dripping with authentic Portuguese chicken flavour. The best part? It's in the West Island, so those of you who call the West Island home don't need to trek all the way out to enjoy a slice of authentic Portuguese heaven. You've got perfection, West Island friends. And it's right in your back yard.
Alright, let me just get this out of the way: I am a seafood fanatic, and the grilled squid here? Mouthwatering. Delectable. I had dreams about it for weeks after I first tried it. Okay, moving swiftly along from my unhealthy obsession with seafood, Douro's menu boasts upscale, authentic Portuguese food. Meaning you might not necisarily find your typical chicken and fries dish over here, but trust me when I tell you that their version is just as fantastic. Delicious, fresh, and perfectly cooked Portuguese fare? That's a win, my friends. That's a pure win.
Another one of Montreal's more famous spots for Portuguese chicken, Jano has been recommended to me by hundreds of different people. Yes. Literally hundreds. And, you know what? All those people were on to something, because Jano's chicken is just mind-blowing. Super flavourful, super juicy, with just the right amount of crisp and char, there is almost nothing on this earth that beats a freshly grilled chicken from Janos. Oh, and their fries? Okay, cool, excuse me while I morph into the heart eyes emoji for a second.
Great food, great prices, great ambiance? Yup, yup, and yup. Imperio hits the "awesome restaurant" trifecta perfectly, friends, but if that's not enough to convince you to make it your new favourite, then one bite of their chicken well. Perfectly tender, crispy, and full of flavour, the chicken at Imperio is a total game changer. Heart eyes, my friends. Heart eyes.
