Montreal Has A Giant Rat Problem And The Close Encounters Told On Reddit Are Bone-Chilling

We can blame construction for this sudden infestation.

Living in a major city means sometimes you have to experience certain things that you wouldn't neccesarily face if you lived anywhere else.

TL;DR Rats seem to be an increasing issue within Montreal as construction continues downtown. Below are some personal experiences Montrealers have had with the rodents that will leave you in disgust.

Things such as delays on public transit, the occasional smell of garbage outside, and the unwelcomed city critters that seem to plague downtown streets. Usually we're able to compromise and put up with these inconveniences, but at times it's really just too much to handle.

One of the most prominent issues Montreal has are its rats. There, I said it. We have a huge rat problem and at times these little demons seem to pop out from every corner imagineable.

Seriously, in the last month alone I've personally spotted four rats scurrying around the busy streets, in broad daylight! Needless to say, I've been watching where I step lately.

It seems like a ton of other Montrealers agree with me, as there's an entire subreddit dedicated to the horror stories of rats spotted around downtown. One reddit user asked Montreal if we have a rat problem and more than a few people replied with their own traumatizing rodent experiences.

The stories seem too horrifying to be true, but it's interesting to really understand just how widespread the rat problem is.

"I use to work at a restaurant across from Joe Beef, it’s now a L’Gros Lux, and the basement had lots of big rats. The owners were totally committed to getting rid of them and had called in experts. They placed traps and filled holes and had staff do a good cleaning put any and all food stuff in metal containers. One one morning I arrived and a rat the night before got caught in a trap and the other rats ate it and left just its spine and head." - GrandMasterBlack

"Hang around station Place d'Armes between the metro and complexe Guy Favreau when it gets dark and you'll see a ton of rats. I usually finish work at midnight and I sometimes see 5 or more rats going in holes behind palais des congrès." - TortuouslySly

"Go walking down by the water in the grass any time after it rains. Like walking on eggshells." - Blakwulf

Of course, quite a few people also gave their own ideas on why they think there are suddenly so many rats everywhere:

"I saw a rat walking down the street in Rosemont like it owned the place. Apparently when the metros shut down, they all pour into the stations." - chapterpt

"Living in Villeray, last year a big rat made it into our basement. I went to the pest control store on Rosemont & Christophe-Colomb for a trap, and the lady told me that since the city started all those sewer works, a lot of rats are disturbed and people see a lot more than they used to." - Jean-Baptiste1763

"There have always been rats, mice and rodents in general in MTL. The question is why are we seeing more of them. Few factors, most important of which is construction. Another big factor is climate of course. Problem with rodents is you cannot eliminate them." - Prof_G

So, it looks like the biggest reason why rats are taking over Montreal is the construction. Unfortunately, construction is basically on every corner of the city. With no end in sight to this disruption, it looks like we'll be dealing with this infestation for quite a while.
