Canada Issues Warning For Lyme Disease

Watch out.
Canada Issues Warning For Lyme Disease

The occurrence of Lyme disease has been increasing rapidly in Quebec for the past several years.

In 2011 there were only 32 reported cases of Lyme diseases, but by 2015, that number had grown to 159. That's because the tick population in Canada has grown 10 times over the past two decades. Since then the number has exploded!

There were almost 1,500 cases across Canada in 2017. That's 50% more than in 2016!  And according to experts, Canada is about to be hit with one of the worst seasons yet.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include fatigue, fever, skin rash and headaches. If left untreated, it can cause heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, and even nervous system disorders.

And it's more than just one tick you have to worry about, ticks can live up to 100 days, and they can lay nearly 50 eggs a day.

Anyone who practices outdoor activities needs to watch out for the bugs, especially if they are in areas with tall grass. You must remember to wear pants and long-sleeved shirts, tuck your pants into your socks, and use insect repellent.

If you spot a tick on your body, you must remove it immediately with tweezers. Be careful not to squeeze it too hard so it doesn't release more bacteria into your body. Once removed, clean the area with soap.
