The mayor of a Labrador community has died after being shot in the lower part of the face during a solo hunting trip.
John Hickey of Happy Valley-Goose Bay was hunting near the Trans-Labrador highway, when the incident occurred.
Hickey died, late Thursday, in a St. John's hospital, surrounded by family.
Mayor Hickey was out alone on Saturday, checking rabbit snares, when he was shot in the face.
He managed to get on a snowmobile and reach a nearby highway for help.
One of his colleagues underlined the superhuman nature of the effort that was required to reach the highway.
He was airlifted to St. John's on Sunday for surgery.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball issued a Twitter statement, lauding Hickey's fighting spirit.
