Hundreds Of Medical Specialists In Isolation As Number Of Quebec COVID-19 Cases Reaches 74

Medical personnel that can't help in person are now manning phones to help with calls.
COVID-19 In Quebec: 74 Confirmed Cases & Hundreds Of Medical Specialists In Isolation
  • After announcing 63 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Quebec, Santé Québec made a second announcement Tuesday upping the count to 74.
  • The Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec has asked approximately 300 union members to self-isolate after recently travelling abroad.
  • Those specialists who cannot treat anyone in person are now helping out with the significant number of calls to coronavirus-related hotlines.

In a second update of COVID-19 in Quebec Tuesday, Santé Québec announced that the number of confirmed cases had reached 74 across the province. Of these, 22 are in Montreal. Earlier in the day, Santé Québec had announced the total as 63 confirmed cases, marking a jump of 11 cases in just one day. However, these two updates, which were sent out just two hours apart, also indicate the sheer volume of testing being done across the province.

The first update yesterday at 1 p.m. indicated that 3,513 people were under investigation and there were 3,723 people who had tested negative for the virus. By 3 p.m., there were fewer than 3,000 people under investigation and 4,778 people had tested negative for the virus.

Reports also indicate that Quebec's first coronavirus case has now made a full recovery. There have been eight deaths so far in Canada related to COVID-19.

The Federation des medecins specialistes du Québec (FMSQ) has been firm when it comes to requesting that their union members place themselves in isolation if they were abroad in recent weeks.

The Canadian Press is now reporting that this has resulted in the isolation of approximately 300 medical specialists in Quebec.

The FMSQ announced last week that those medical specialists who are currently in isolation and unable to do physical work would be available to help with calls from individuals with questions or concerns related to the coronavirus.

The tweet above reads, "Reinforcement for 811 by the FMSQ: medical specialists in quarantine will lend a hand to the service teams overwhelmed with calls even today."

Other medical specialists are finding ways to help, as well. The FMSQ announced yesterday that one Montreal plastic surgery clinic would "suspend its activities" beginning today in an effort to help the overwhelmed healthcare system.

Translation: A plastic surgery clinic in Mtl suspends its activities tomorrow and offers its 32 hospital and convalescent beds if necessary to the MSSS.

Of the confirmed cases in Canada, 12% of infected individuals have required hospitalization.
