Donald Trump And The United States Are Keeping Justin Trudeau Awake At Night

Ongoing trade negotiations with the United States are keeping our typically optimistic Prime Minister from sleeping at night.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in an interview with Global News on Monday Night, said that the ongoing talks with Mexico and the U.S. to update the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are making him lose out on sleep.

President Donald Trump has been vocal in the past about criticizing NAFTA, calling it a bad deal for the U.S. and threatening to pull out of the trade deal, which could have serious impacts on Canada’s economy.

And, given six months of notice, Trump could actually pull the U.S. out of NAFTA.

“There’s a level of unpredictability” said Trudeau. “We know if the relationship with the U.S. goes sour, we could be doing everything right at home and our economy would still end up suffering.”

Over US$1 trillion is traded between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. And, unfortunately, NAFTA negotiations have not been going smoothly.

NAFTA talks have already been extended, and after a brief pause, will restart again in Montreal in January.

But, Trudeau emphasized, Canada won’t be signing any deal if it’s bad for the country.

“If it’s a bad deal, I’m going to walk away from it, because no deal is better than a bad deal for Canadians” said Trudeau.

Workers rights, benefits to the middle class, and equal opportunity economic growth are guidelines that are driving Trudeau’s approach to NAFTA.

When asked about Donald Trump’s threat of pulling the U.S. out of NAFTA, Trudeau said that “triggering a termination isn’t going to have them be able to negotiate a better deal with Canada.”

If Trump does pull out of NAFTA, Trudeau says the federal government will ““figure out how to move forward.”

“It won’t be great, but you know, we’ll all survive.”

Not exactly words that inspire confidence. Guess that sleep loss really is impacting Trudeau’s usual sunny disposition.
