Elle Fashion Magazine Is Under Hot Water For It's "Fat-ist" Cover

Canadian magazine gets criticized for its biased approach.

Elle's February 2014 "Women in TV" feature granted covers to several iconic female actresses such as Zooey Deschanel, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling and Allison Williams. However, unlike all of the covers, there's one that truly stands out.

Each actress has a shot that is full of color and life. However, Mindy Kaling's cover is unlike the rest. Kaling, creator of Fox sitcom "The Mindy Project" appears in a black and white shot that is closely cropped and omits her entire body. Feminist blog, Jezebel, explains that Elle is sending the message that "if you're not white and skinny, smile for your monochrome close-up."

A similar incident occurred when Elle magazine featured the cast of "Bridesmaids" on their cover. Full figured actress, Melissa McCarthy is hidden by an over sized trench coat. Likewise, in a cover featuring American actress, Gabby Sidibe from the film Precious, Elle magazine was accused of lightening her skin tone in a close up shot.

"Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue," Elle told E! News.
