Finding quality sweets can be harder than it sounds. I ain't talkin' bout the stuff you find in your grocery store or, God forbid, the frozen food section. I'm talkin' legit, from scratch, high quality, and made with tons of love baked goods. Montreal's got tons to choose from, and MTL Blog is here to weed out the cake-mix users and show you the creme de la buttercream of Montreal bakeries. It is time to get baked Montreal.\nCupcakes have always been a staple in the dessert world, and recently the delicious baked good has exploded on to the world food scene. Tons of cupcake vendors have sprung up across the city of Montreal appease the hungry masses, but just because it is in a cup, doesn't mean that all the little cakes are equal.\nOne of Montreal's foremost cupcake store is 'Simplement D Liche,' located in the heart of the Plateau, just below Duluth on St. Denis. Desserts are a passion of mine and I am always critical when trying out retail baked goods. 'Simplement D Liche' did not dissapoint, however, as the cupcakes lived up to the namesake and are simply delicious.\nSimplement D Liche's retail store is the embodiment of a cupcake. Small, cute, quaint, and chock full of delicious flavours. Tables and chairs are available both inside and outside the store, for casual cupcake chilling, and desserts line nearly all the walls to constantly entice customers.\nAside from cupcakes, Simplement D Liche (SDL) also offers custom cakes and personal requests to its customers. I was impressed at the architectural baking skills of the SDL team, as they are able to create cakes ranging from a luxurious wedding cake....\nTo a camera cake....\nAnd even a van Gogh cupcake painting.\nYou can even make more risqué requests for your next bachelor/bachelorette party. Unfortunately I couldn't nab a pic of any of those!\nWhile the cake crafting skills of SDL are something to behold, their cupcakes are the main star of the store. 8 flavours are offered daily, in both mini and large varieties, with weekly changes and seasonal variants. The best quality and organic ingrediants are solely used at SDL, something I truly believe 'cuz these cupcakes were fantastic.\nTo assess SDL's baked goods I requested their most basic flavour, a simple vanilla cupcake with frosting, and a couple of more interesting flavours: key-lime and triple chocolate.\nAs simple as it sounds, SDL's classic vanilla was incredibly delicious. The cake base was light and airy and was topped off with a whip cream-like frosting unlike anything I've had before. Apparently this is a much more complicated frosting than the classic buttercream (made by starting with a roux, for all the foodies out there) and it definitly shows in its velvety and rich flavor.\nI'm not usually a fan of citrus-desserts but even I couldn't dislike SDL's key lime cupcake. Once again, the frosting was incredible. It was literally a key lime pie mousse that tasted just like its pie-counterpart. An incredibly refreshing summer flavour.\nNow onto the triple chocolate. Before eating this baby I was warned that I may need a glass of water to go along with it, a very helpful suggestion, because this chocolate cupcake is intense. Moist, dense, and incredibly rich, this is not your average chocolate cupcake. You can really taste the dark chocolate and cocoa in both the frosting and cake, a testament to the high quality of ingredients used at SDL. For all chocolate lovers out there, I can't recommend this cupcake more. Just be sure to bring some milk.\nWhether your a cupcake fan or not, I recommend checking out Simplement D Liche ASAP. SDL is reasonably priced, has a relaxed atmosphere, and, most importantly, has the most delicious cakes in cups I've tasted in Montreal to date.
