Tucked away on rue Hochelaga in the East End neighbourhood of Tétreaultville sits the unassuming Coq de L'Est. Only the kitschy illumination of a tattered sign featuring a personified chicken alerts passersby to its existence.

Even its online presence is minimal. The "About" section on its Facebook page reads only, "Rôtisserie et côtes levées — Chicken Joint." The restaurant has no website.

For Montrealers living in the denser neighbourhoods at the centre of the island, getting to Le Coq de l'Est wihtout a car involves a trek to the eastern extremity of the green line and then either a 10-minute bus ride or a 25-minute walk.

But step inside to the tiny restaurant and enjoy perhaps the best roast chicken and ribs you'll ever have in an intimate, quirky space.

Though it may appear like a classic BBQ and chicken shack (and in many respects it is), le Coq de L'Est continually reimagines the Quebec specialty.

Often, Quebec homestyle dishes take on an Asian twist. Past menu items have included a ramen with roast chicken and wings and a particularly delectable chicken tandoori.

The restaurant menu changes and always seems to be playfully lacking in detail, but expect a bit of a surprise on the first bite.

Order a selection of the specials with a group of friends and indulge together to maximize your sample of the chef's impressive creations.

Truthfully, the only way to get a true sense of le Coq de l'Est is to simply go. Organize a large dinner party and embark on a mini road trip to this lesser-visited section of Montreal.

Brunch is also an option this summer!

Le Cog de l'Est is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Sunday brunch begins at 11:00 AM.
