Before anyone gets into an uproar about how everything has been Pumpkin Spice-ified and they're sick of it, note that this is one culinary occasion where the inclusion of seasonal spices actually makes sense, and unlike most other PS-recipes, this dish actually contains pumpkin. Hate on the PS-ness of the recipe or no, you're mouth will water anyway when you see the Pumpkin Spice Shepherds Pie.
Originally known as the Caribbean shepherd's pie, created by Diana Henry, we changed up the name of this pâté chinois for the fact that it uses classic fall spices like cinnamon, cloves, and allspice, all of which are used in most Pumpkin Spice foods. The orange topping, made of mashed sweet potatoes, also adds to the Pumpkin Spice-ness of the dish, which does look like a sweet (pun intended) alternative to the classic white potato pâté chinois topping.
A little gourmet and involved, the Pumpkin Spice Shepherd's Pie is filled with a ton of ground meat, as all pâté chinois should be, with chunks of pumpkin thrown in along with a few other veggies, all of which is seasoned with autumnal spices and some more esoteric additions. The topping, a puree of sweet potatoes, butter, and a couple of spices, is a little more simple to put together, though looking at the dish, the whole process looks worth the effort.
