10 Unique Montreal Winter Date Ideas
Date out of the box this season.
Let's be real here people, if you're in a couple, you've no doubt already exhausted your cache of winter date ideas. If not, you will soon, because there's only so many times you can go skating, enjoy a hot chocolate, or any of the other basic winter dates everyone has heard of a thousand times over.
Being in a couple myself, I know how boring it can get once you run out things to do with your significant other. And there's only so many nights you can just stay in and binge watch [INSERT NETFLIX SHOW HERE].
So, as a service to all those who have a girl/boyfriend they want to spend some quality time with, and not have to go tobogganing every weekend, I've assembled a list of some unique and original winter dates ideas.
To ensure there's a little something for everyone, from the sporty couples to the geeky types, the list is pretty eclectic. You might not be into every entry, but you'll no doubt find a date idea perfect for you and your bae.
Check 'em out below.
Snow Yoga (Free)
Couples who yoga together, stay together, right? Okay, maybe I totally bullsh*tted that intro, but getting a little physical with your significant other is always a good idea. By which I mean physical exercise, obviously.
Rather than get hella sweaty at the gym, or at a standard Yoga studio, try embracing the winter's coolness by partaking in some snow yoga at Parc La Fontaine or Laurier this winter.
Taking place Saturdays and Sundays (depending on the park you're headed too) the snow yoga sessions are also entirely free!
Disco Tubing at Parc Jean-Drapeau
Sure, you could go plain old boring tubing for a date, or you could make things extra special by going Disco Tubing at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
One of the many events within the, the Disco Tubing course is made up of ten lanes and two giant super slides equipped with six meter high launch pads to get you rocketing down the hill with tons of technicolour lights flying by.
The Star Wars Retro Gaming Festival
If you've got a geek for a girl/boyfriend, or if they're just a Star Wars fan (which is a very real possibility since everyone fell in love with The Force Awakens) then blow their mind with Montreal's Retro Gaming Expo.
A celebration of everything old school and nerd-tastic, you can find toys, video games, anime, and cosplay at the event made up of over 80 tables and exhibitors.
Of course, maybe you're not into all this stuff, but sometimes you just need to bite the bullet for your very geeky SO (I know my bf can relate). Plus, by taking them to the Retro Gaming Expo, you'll be able to bring up how you always take them to cool stuff they want to do, a classic relation-guilt maneuver.
The Secret Mount Royal Snowshoe Adventure
Snowshoeing as a date-activity is pretty unique and fun in itself. Tie in a tour of Mount Royal that showcases the mountain's secret trails and vantage points and you have a one-of-a-kind date idea for you and your SO to enjoy.
Organized by Les Amis de la Montagne, the City Lights Snowshoeing Excursion on Mount Royal includes snowshoe rentals, hot chocolate, and a rather exciting experience for a very reasonable price.
Note, the journey is done with a group, but if you know another couple of couples, you could make a group date out of the Mount Royal tour.
The Virtual Reality Garden at the Phi Centre
Launched this January, the Virtual Reality Garden is the newest permanent exhibition at the Phi Centre. Integrating modern technology with the world of art, you and your date will be treated to a sensory experience like no other, for free.
Some other notable date-worthy events going down at the Phi Centre in the next few weeks include a showing of David Bowie's Labyrinth, which will also double as a memorial to the late musician, and screenings of a selection of indy and international films.
La Grande Tournée du Chocolat Chaud
Going out for a cup of hot chocolate with your bae is the most cliche winter date idea ever, but that isn't to say it's not an enjoyable (and delicious) date idea. But rather than be basic, take the "hot chocolate date" to the next level by heading to La Grande Tournée du Chocolat Chaud.
A city-wide showcase of the tastiest chocolate creations Montreal has to offer, La Grande Tournée du Chocolat Chaud will wow your taste buds in every way imaginable. Better yet, all 20 participating restaurants will be offering special hot chocolates at the set price of $3, ensuring you save a bit of cash on your chocolate tour, too.
Wine & Food At the McCord Museum
Personally, I think heading to the museum is an amazing date idea no matter the season. Others might not agree. But what will make a museum-date appealing to everyone? Adding in alcohol and food, of course.
That's exactly what you'll get at McCord Musuem's annual Wine and Food event, where you'll get to enjoy the flavours of some of the nation's best wines and locally made culinary creations.
In truth, the event is a tad expensive, but if you really want to treat your SO with an event that's equally delicious and cultural, this is for you.
Salon d'Amour et Seduction
Nothing makes for a unique date than a sex show, and Montreal is hosting the largest in North America once the Salon de l’Amour et de la Séduction takes over Place Bonaventure this weekend.
Expect live shows, erotic art performances, more sex products than you'll know what to do with, and even seminars on sex tricks and techniques. Needless to say you two will have a lot to see and do that you won't find anywhere else.
The Olympic Park's Watercourse
Winter dates don't need to be all about the cold weather, because you can still enjoy a taste of summer even though it's January. Live in a bit of denial and enjoy the fun of summer in the dead of winter at the Olympic Park's new watercourse centre, which is a veritable aquatic playground open to all ages.
Fantasia Presents at Cinema du Parc
Film fanatics (or those dating one) need to pay heed to this unique date idea, because it involves some of the strangest movies you'll be able to see anywhere.
Fantasia Presents at Cinema du Parc is exactly what it sounds like, a collaboration between the film festival and the independent movie theatre on du Parc, allowing you to check out all the zaniest movies you might have missed this summer when Fantasia was held.
Don't expect your standard movies at this film event, which will be held monthly, ensuring you have a solid date idea for you and your film buff SO for the foreseeable future
Bonus: Head to a Montreal Cat Café
Yes, we've talked about Montreal cat cafés before/you've heard all about them, and given the concept's overexposure it isn't the most original date idea, but that still doesn't mean it's not unique.
For one, if your SO (or yourself) loves cats, this is a definite done deal in the great date department. Plus, winter is simply made for chilling in cafés. And again, cat cafés are still super strange/unique despite the fact that they've gotten tons of media exposure. It's not like you've been yet anyway.
You do have some options when it comes to cat cafes, as Montreal has two of 'em for whatever reason. I don't think there's much of a difference between the two, so check out both FB pages below and choose for yourself:
