11 Times The Montreal Canadiens Have Appeared In Hollywood Movies And TV Shows
You may have missed a few of these sightings.
The "CH" is kind of like the Illuminati symbol. It's recognizable, people put it everywhere, and it represents a group of extremely powerful people who invites a fierce debate whenever anyone brings them up. And just like the Illuminati symbol, there's someone obsessed enough to (partially) list every time it shows up in your TV shows and movies.
1. How I Met Your Mother (season 4, episode 11)
Remember the episode where Marshall takes Robin to the the Walleye Saloon, a Minnesota-themed bar? At the end, the two wind up at the Hoser Hut, a Canadian-themed bar. In the scene where the famous "Canadians are afraid of the dark" joke comes from, you can an extra wearing a Habs jersey.
2. The Price is Right (2011 season)
"An audience member sent this in...this is a jersey from some goaltender in Montreal."
(Uh, please, this is a jersey from THE goaltender in Montreal. Apologies to Jaroslav Halak. And I guess the goal guy for Montreal Impact. Sorry we never talk about you guys, ever).
3. The Mighty Ducks (1992)
You take your racially insensitive chirping out of here, ten year old Sidney Crosby look-alike.
4. The Exorcist (1972)
Guy on the right is wearing a Habs cap and looks so done with the horror movie fvckery happening around him. Guy in the middle should get two minutes for diving.
5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
A teenage Habs fan tries to buy some illicit Van Halen tickets. I love the collared shirt underneath the jersey, like he's trying to keep it business casual for his meeting with a scalper.
6. The F Word (2013)
We couldn't find a clip from this 2013 Irish-Canadian romantic comedy, starring Daniel Radcliffe, to prove the existence of a Habs shoutout. Still, rest assured that Adam Driver's character proudly reps a Montreal Canadiens shirt for at least two of the scenes.
From the National Post: "By way of costume shorthand and signifier to flesh out his secondary role, Driver’s best friend character wears the same Parkdale T-shirt that’s worn later in the movie by Mackenzie Davis. More sly is the appearance of a Montreal Canadiens top. “Honestly? Director Mike Dowse just loves the Habs."
7. Regular Show
The classmate sitting next to Rigby is wearing an old-school Habs jersey. Love this neat little touch from the animators.
8. Jerry Maguire (1996)
Sports agent Tom Cruise has a huge cardboard cutout of a Habs player in his office, no big deal.
9. Lord of the Rings (2001-03)
Oh shit, what? How can films based on a medieval-ish high fantasy trilogy contain a hockey reference? By having a Canadiens super-fan play Aragorn, son of Arathorn, who is called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadain, the heir of Isildur Elendil's son of Gondor, that's how.
Viggo Mortensen wore a Montreal Canadiens shirt underneath his armour for "quite a bit" of filming. You can't actually see it in the movie though. He said in an official Canadiens interview that "I’ll always look to see if the shirt peeks out on screen but I’ve never been able to see it."
10. The Simpsons (season 10, episode 23)
Classic Simpsons plot: the family goes to Japan and compete on a game show. But check out this act that follows them - Polite Canadian Couple Gets Scorpions Poured On Them.
11. Meatballs (1979)
A Bill Murray classic where he's the head counsellor of a boys summer camp, and evidently a hockey fan. (Murray wears a Chicago Blackhawks jacket later on). Anyways, here is a man in a Habs jersey teaching you how to fold a shirt
