Yesterday, tragedy struck when 12 individuals were killed when Paris-based satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was attacked by two armed gunmen, who have yet to be apprehended. Several comedic cartoon drawings featuring the prophet Muhammad, published in the magazine several years ago, was the cause for the terrorist attack.
Citizens from around the world joined together in solidarity with the victims' families and to protest censorship in the media, using the tagline "Je suis/I am Charlie." Montreal was no exception, with hundreds of citizens banding together with signs and pens to honour those slain in Paris.
Photographer Nicolas Lepiller attended the meeting last night, held in downtown Montreal, and took a series of powerful photos that truly showcase the solemnity of the event, and the compassion felt by citizens of the city.
