Even though it's been summer in Montreal for quite some time, it was starting to feel like the weather was never going to reflect it there for a while. But, never mind that, it's finally hot and sunny in Montreal, just the way summer should be.

And while that's fine and lovely for when you're out and about enjoying the city, returning home to an unair-conditioned apartment can get you feeling like:

So if you're one of the many who finds themselves lying motionless on their floor, or sticking their head in their freezer just to cool down, here are 21 tips and tricks to keep cool in your apartment this summer.

1. Get yourself a fan or two, but make sure you use them effectively by placing them at opposite ends to create a crossbreeze.

2. Close your blinds during the day to keep out those hot sun rays.

3. Open windows while you're sleeping to let in the breeze.

4. Place a metal bowl of salted ice in front of fan for a DIY air conditioner.

5. Unplug TVs, computers, and other electronics when you're not using them. Even when they're turned off but still plugged in, they'll give off heat.

6. Cook outside and/or use the microwave as much as possible. The less you use the oven and stove, the cooler your apartment will be.

7. Put smooth white fabric covers on your furniture to help it retain less heat.

8. Hang your sheets up in the coolest part of the house during the day, or alternatively put them in the fridge/freezer for a few minutes before bed, to keep you cooler at night.

9. Wear loose cotton clothes for ultimate breathability.

10. Need to cool off quickly? Put ice packs on pulse points like your wrists or neck.

11. Take colder showers - it'll not only cool you down but having less steam will keep your apartment cooler too!

12. Hanging a wet sheet in front of an open window will help to cool down the room.

13. Cover your windows in reflective film to keep the heat out.

14. Keep your ceiling fan on the counterclockwise setting to push cool air down to the floor.

15. Always make sure you use your bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans to draw out any excess steam.

16. Using cotton bed sheets will help keep you cooler at night because they don't retain heat like flannel ones would.

17. Make sure your apartment is well insulated to keep out any excess heat. Use weatherstrips and caulking around your windows to ensure maximum insulation.

18. Some people believe drinking hot tea on a hot day actually cools you down, because it triggers your sweating mechanism.

19. Put a couple full water bottles in the freezer in the morning, then take them to bed with you - it's like a reverse hot water bottle.

20. Keep your lights off as much as possible to reduce excess heat.

21. Switch your lightbulbs to LED - they give off less heat than regular bulbs.
