This year, Labour Day conveniently falls on the very first day of September. For many of you, that means a well-deserved long weekend before getting back into the autumnal grind and a great opportunity to kick back and catch up on some you time. Just don't forget that it also means many businesses and establishments are closed.

Here's a fairly comprehensive list of what's closed and what's open on Labour Day 2014.

What's closed:

  • most municipal and city of Montreal offices

  • municipal court

  • banks

  • most provincial and federal offices

  • postal service and Canada Post post offices

  • shopping malls

  • major grocery stores/supermarkets

  • most retail stores, but flower stores, bookstores, and other small shops can open so they choose

  • some restaurants that close anyway on Mondays, best to check beforehand

What's open:

  • most dépanneurs

  • most service-based businesses like hair salons, restaurants, gas stations

  • most pharmacies, but hours may be reduced

  • all SAQ Express and some SAQ Classique liquor stores, with direct street access

  • many local swimming pools, for one last pool day

  • movie theaters

  • public markets/farmers markets

  • most Montreal tourism and cultural centers

  • garbage/recycling pick ups

  • public transportation runs on weekend/holiday schedule

If in doubt, you can call 311 (Montreal's information hotline)  on your telemaphone for complete details.

So be sure to bust out your white linen suit for one last hurrah and, should you find yourself with a day off from labour, check out some of these awesome things to do in Montreal:
