Winter is nearly gone, but the harsh memories of snow-ridden sidewalks and icy streets are still fresh in our minds. There is a glimmer of hope, as a new and improved "smart" snow removal system is being introduced in certain Montreal neighborhoods next winter.

With new technologies added to existsing snow removal systems, the project hopes to increase efficiency, improve the monitoring of operations, and decrease the risk of fraudulent snow removal services.

The snow removal initiative will cost a total of $6.7 million, and will feature:

  • Snow blowers and plows outfitted with GPS and other area-monitoring tools
  • Surveillance cameras at snow loading sites
  • New technological network to track snow removal in different Montreal areas.

Montreal's mayor Denis Coderre has deemed the smart-snow removal project "a priority" so its pretty likely the plan will stay on track and be introduced in the 2014-2015 winter season.

Here are the 9 Montreal boroughs who can look forward to the perks of a smart-snow removal system:

  • Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
  • Plateau-Mont-Royal
  • Ville-Marie
  • Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
  • Rivière-des-Pairies–Pointes-aux-Trembles
  • Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension
  • Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
  • Sud-Ouest
  • Ahunstic-Cartierville
