As the story developed, the improvised device turned out to be pipe bomb and a battery pack.

The exact site of the explosion appears to have been a subway platform close to the terminal.

And the injury toll increased to one--the bomber himself.

Although the suspect has not been identified by name, it is believed that he is in his 20s, possibly from Bangladesh.

Reports also say that he was setting of the bomb in the name of the Islamic State.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is the nation's largest, handling about 230,000 passengers every week day.
