Canadians Have Smoked 31 Million Joints Since Legalization
Canadians love their weed. It's no surprise that when legalization kicked off last October that lineups would be around the block and the stores would be hit with massive shortages. People were quick to blame the government's lack of preparation and even though that somewhat true, Canadians smoke a ton of weed.
Statistics Canada reports that from October 2018 to December 2018, cannabis retailers sold roughly 15, 694 kilograms of dried cannabis flower to Canadian consumers. That's...a lot.
TL;DR Statistics Canada just released information on the total quantity of cannabis sold in the country since legalization. According to these reports, Canadians have purchased tens of thousands of kilograms of dried flower cannabis in only a few months. In fact, these numbers equate to roughly 31 million half-gram joints. That's nearly one joint for every Canadian!
According to CTV News, the total number of dried cannabis sold equates to around "31,388,000 half-gram joints". This represents the total number of dried flower cannabis sold between October and December. Honestly, I'm surprised it isn't more.
Think about it, Canada has a population of roughly 37 million. If about 31 million joints were smoked, that means almost every Canadian, in theory, smokes weed. We'll chalk up the 6 million difference to straight-edge people, religious types, and people who freak out when smoking.
These figures represent online and retail sales for non-medical cannabis. Medical cannabis sales figures are much lower, but considering the availability of cannabis, this isn't a surprise. Unfortunately, there's no data (yet) that shows how many people still use black-market resources for their purposes.
This huge quantity of cannabis sold finally explains the drastic shortages that are happening across the country. It's true, Canadians simply smoke too much weed. If nearly 31 million joints were consumed in three months, imagine what the stats will look like at the end of this year.
Statistics indicate that 26, 244 litres of cannabis oil was sold over the same time period. No numbers on how many dabs that is, but that's a lot of oil. That's 52, 488 water bottles at 500ml each, to help you picture it better.
Whether or not prices will remain the same or increase, the fact is that people in Canada absolutely love their weed. Look for these numbers and total quantities to increase exponentially once Ontario opens 25 brand-new stores on April 1st.
Does anyone else need a joint after reading this?
