Metro, the grocery store giant with more than two dozen stores across the city, is putting in place a new tactic to reduce food waste that will benefit both customers and the environment.

The store is going to be discounting soon to be expired products by 30%. The move is a part of a larger strategy to cut food waste in half by 2025.

Metro employees will be placing "30%" off stickers on soon to expire products, which will make spotting the discounts very easy.

Food waste is a huge problem in North America. Second Harvest reports that more than 60% of food in Canada is lost or wasted annually. 17% of this food waste is lost through distribution and retail.

The new stickers should incentivise customers to buy food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

According to Grocery Business, "The “30% off” stickers will be placed on products daily as employees do the freshness rounds in the produce, meat, fish, deli, cheese, bakery, grocery and dairy departments."

Discounted food that has not been sold will go to food banks, if stores are partnered with a participating organisation.

As of now, 20 stores in Quebec are participating in the pilot project. The project may expand if there is enough customer demand.

This new system is an attempt to make the discounting process more systemic. Metro has already put similar programs in place to help eliminate food waste.

On their website, Metro states that this offer is available in "participating Metro and Metro Plus stores only. We reserve the right to suspend, modify, or terminate this program at any time and without notice."

In order to combat food waste, Metro has launched a new program that discounts soon-to-expire products by 30%.
