Each city was assessed on various categories relating to transit sustainability, including types of transport, air pollution, affordability, and cyclist infrastructure, reports The Gazette

On the global scale, Montreal came in at number 36. But when looking only at North American cities, Montreal ranked #4 for sustainability in transit and transportation.

The top three cities were New York, San Francisco, and Vancouver, the only Canadian city to rank higher than Montreal.

When discussing Montreal’s transit makeup, the report praised the city’s “use of digital technologies to keep riders informed” and the large number of public transit users. Montreal also performed well in the environmental category.

Ways Montreal could improve were also listed. An increased number of transit stops and a larger investment on public transit were both cited as areas of improvement for the city.
