As the consumerist season of Christmas is about to take hold, kicked off in style with giant Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, there is one group that will not be shopping with the rest of North America. Climate Strike Canada has launched its  global Black Friday Climate Strike initiatives with the slogans "Don't buy into Black Friday" and "Our futures are not for sale."

According to Climate Strike Canada, "Black Friday is a day of consumerism that reflects the larger culture of disposability, capitalism, and consumption. The transactions between corporations, our government, industries, and political parties put our futures and the planet's health at risk."

The strike has been slated for cities across the country on November 29, promoting a "Green Friday" over Black Friday.

Climate activist group, Extinction Rebellion Québec, is organizing Montreal's strike with multiple "swarms" throughout Downtown Montreal starting at 5:30 a.m.

Pushing for a more sustainable, recyclable way of consuming, Extinction Rebellion has also organized a clothing and thrift swap where you can donate belongings and leave with new ones (if you so choose).

"Most of the stuff we buy is built cheap and designed to be obsolescent. This forces us to continue consuming and extracting new resources to sustain that consumption."

If you're interested in donating clothes or other items, you can do so at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)

The strike demonstrations will be followed by a rally at 3 p.m. and a "festive reappropriation of Dorchester square" at 5 p.m.

If you aren't planning on shopping Black Friday sales or attending the strikes popping up throughout Montreal, this Friday may be a good day to stay far, far away from the downtown core.
