In a Twitter post, the Conservative party claimed that Andrew Scheer won the French-language debate on TVA despite a media consensus that he struggled.\nQuebec debate viewers wasted no time pouncing on the post, ridiculing both the assertion and the "embarrassing" baseball metaphor that delivered it.\nVisit MTLBlog for more headlines.\nIn the first French-language debate on TVA before the Canadian election, federal leaders squared-off on various issues including Quebec values, bill 21, abortion, immigration, and many other key points.\nBloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet came out ahead with his eloquence in French though NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was a pleasant surprise with how effortlessly he was able to retort in la langue de Molière.\nPrime Minister Trudeau also had a strong showing, remaining composed and clear on his talking points. Since Trudeau's Liberals currently have a strong lead in the Quebec polls, it was up to Conservative leader Andrew Scheer to show Quebecers that he's the right guy for the job.\nThough nigh every media outlet agreed that Scheer fell flat, the Conservative Party saw things differently.\nIn a Twitter post, the Conservatives claimed that Scheer actually won the debate, hitting what they call "a home run." Among commenters, the post immediately strung as awkward in a city that doesn’t even have a baseball stadium.\nPeople across Canada, and especially in Quebec, didn't waste time jumping on the Conservatives' claim.\nThe post makes a clear dig at Trudeau's blackface incident but the attempt at a snide insult was, for many, overshadowed by the questionable phrase, "sock some dingers."\nC'mon Canada, do you want four more years of Justin Trudeau playing dress up and hiking your costs, or do you want to see Andrew Scheer make life more affordable and sock some dingers? pic.twitter.com/eE2MyzcuH2— Conservative Party (@CPC_HQ) October 3, 2019\nFor those of you unfamiliar with baseball lingo, "socking a dinger" is a synonym for a home run. Naturally, many pounced on the opportunity to make baseball jokes of their own at Scheer's expense.\nOh look!!! Self proclaimed King of lies strike again!!! #ScheeringTheResume #ScheerDisaster #Cdnpoli #elxn43 #VoteNoCPC— ruthko🦂🌈 (@ruthmkb) October 3, 2019\nSome argued that with Scheer's swing form, there's no possible way that the ball is going any further than the pitcher's mound.\nThis is hilarious! It is really hard to picture Scheer being able to hit the broadside of a barn let alone a baseball or softball with that bat! #cdnpoli do you want to return to the Harper years? Can you trust Scheer? NO! You can't!— Cindy Swoveland (@CPSwoveland) October 3, 2019\nYou’ve never played baseball have you— Tom H (@humourme1234) October 3, 2019\nREAD ALSO: A Montreal Man Told Jagmeet Singh To "Cut Off" His Turban At The Atwater Market (Video)\nSome did come to Scheer's defence, but most comments ridiculed both the baseball metaphor and the assertion.\n"I'm a baseballer now!" - @AndrewScheer pic.twitter.com/KciYi53Luf— L'il Jan On the Prairies✌❤🍁 (@Learning2GetBy) October 3, 2019\nThough I personally think it's a little unfair to attack his French skills (he is from Ontario, after all, at least he tried) a few commenters thought Scheer's French was an embarrassment.\nDon't know what you were watching, but Scheer was a disaster. So many of his positions are opposite to what Quebec folks care about. Not to mention his French is still atrocious.— Mike Morris (@1MikeMorris) October 3, 2019\nWith his stuttering, broken French, I think not but heck we all like fantasy now and then— Bonnie Carter 🐔🍷🍀 (@BonnieLCarter) October 3, 2019\nJust a bit tone deaf claiming to "win" the French debate in English, non?— 🍁MFing Fletchy ☘ (@Darth_Pingu) October 3, 2019\nNobody could understand him. Hard to hit a home run without a bat.— Brian Wilde (@BWildeGlobal) October 3, 2019\nOthers were more concerned about his athleticism.\nScheer swinging a baseball bat....hahahahahahahaahahahahahahahaha and hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha snork hahahahahahahahahahaha Now do him taking a slap shot from the top of the circle.— Allan Westview 🥚🤖☮️ (@Westview_Al) October 3, 2019\n"sock some dingers"?As if @AndrewScheer has ever played any sport or even gone for a jog.lmao pic.twitter.com/9ucOIi2KOE— Barbara Levesque (@belle_levesque) October 3, 2019\nI wouldn't use this guy as your athletic figure. Maybe have him baking a pie— Kenneth Noisewater (@fantseepants) October 3, 2019\nAnd many took the opportunity to harp on the classic "Scheer=Trump" argument that you see all over social media.\nLOL I've never seen someone in my life LESS athletic than Andrew Scheer. He also lies more than Trump, so yes, I'll gladly take 4 more years of Trudeau.— John C (@blue_jay_john) October 3, 2019\nDid Andrew Scheer win? The consensus says definitely not. But he did manage to be the talk of the town today.\nomg, this is so lame.
