Everything We Know About The Proposed New Sleeper Train From Montreal To New York City
Get to the Big Apple overnight!
- A former Quebec MNA is proposing the introduction of an overnight sleeper .
- Plans are in place but the proposal needs support from Amtrak and CP Rail to move forward.
- Here's everything we know.
Dear Valérie Plante,
All I want for Christmas is a sleeper train... then just think of how cool we'd be. How easy it would be for me to visit that one friend I have in Bed-Stuy.
And can you imagine how jealous Toronto would be?
You're a lover of trains. I'm with you on the whole Pink Line... so what do you say about making this sleeper train from Montreal to NYC happen?
Can't afford to fly
When word started spreading about a potential sleeper train that was going to travel between Montreal and NYC, I was immediately interested. I, too, was raised a lover of trains and as sure as my mother is reading this right now, I needed to know more about this because I was on board.
Pun fully intended.
So I called to speak with François Rebello, the man with the train plan, to learn more about his dream of a sleeper trip by rail between Montreal and NYC.
The train trip between our Belle Ville and the Big Apple is about 11 hours, so it makes perfect sense that Robello sees potential in having a train that could get you there overnight.
The perks of a sleeper are twofold because you get to where you need to be without having to kill time and you save on the cost of a hotel.
Rebello also noted on the phone with me that the train can often present an opportunity for travellers to get to know each other and connect over shared interests.
That's what he's observed on the train he currently manages called Train Hotel.
Train Hotel runs as an adventure experience full of jazz, good food and great views. The train does run from Montreal to New York, but not overnight.
This is why Rebello has made it entertaining from start to finish, with live jazz singers, led discussions, delicious food and experts who can enlighten riders about the history, geography and culture of certain regions as you pass through them by train.

Currently, Rebello has completed the business plan and secured investors to get the sleeper train rolling (again, pun intended, try and stop me).
On our call, he also indicated that New York State was also onboard with the plan (hence my appeal to our own Ms. Plante).
Now what he requires is some support from Amtrak and CP Rail, who would need to allow him to rent the rails for this purpose.
Rebello is certain the train would be a huge hit and I take no convincing. I know people my age are dying to take the train, for multiple reasons.
It's cheaper than flying and it's better for the environment than driving and flying both. Public transit is the past, present and future best way to get around, particularly for millennials. For that reason, Rebello is striving to make sure the price will be accessible for as many people as possible.
Here's hoping he can make it happen for all of us!
We reached out to Amtrak and CP Rail and they both declined to make a comment at this time.
Stay tuned for updates!
