Le Quartier DIX30, a major shopping center on Montreal's South Shore, has been evacuated in part due to a gas leak.

The leak was discovered just after 10:30. Shoppers and employees have been evacuated until further notice. Police warn that the operation to stop the leak may last several hours.

The Longueuil police are asking people to avoid the area until the gas leak is stopped.

The leak, which is described as being a "major" by police, is at the corner of Quartier Boulevard and Leduc Boulevard.

Stores and restaurants are affected by the leak, including the 3 Brasseurs, La Cage and Casey's. The Tweet below shows what part of the shopping center is closed off:

"Major gas leak in Brossard. The SPAL (Longueuil Area Police) is assisting the SSIAL and Energir (metro gas), who are presently intervening. More details at m.facebook.com/PoliceSpal/"

According to police, the area is likely to be blocked off until sometime between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. They recommend that citizens avoid the area.

"Major gas leak near 3 Brasseurs. Avoid the area."

Rome Boulevard and Highway 10 starting at du Quartier Boulevard are closed off.

Gas leaks have been a frequent occurence this summer. Earlier today, firefighters in Montreal dealt with 2 gas leaks: one on the corner of Gouin Boulevard and Robitaille, which lasted over 2 hours. 

The other gas leak is at the corner of Henri-Bourassa E. and Ave. Du Parc. The gas leak is still ongoing.
