Mayors of the Montreal Metropolitan Community (CMM) just approved a $50 increase to the registration fee for suburban drivers. The increase will results in an additional $100 million in revenue for regional public transit, according to the CBC. That includes the STM.

Drivers who reside on the Island of Montreal already pay this fee, according to the Société d'assurance automobile de Québec (SAAQ). The increase will take effect for drivers in off-island Montreal suburbs in 2021, the CBC continues.

Only one area mayor, Jean Martel of Boucherville, voted against the increase.

CAQ provincial minister for Montreal Chantal Rouleau has expressed her opporition to the price increase, says the CBC. But during the 2018 campaign, premier François Legault expressed interest in funding extensions of the orange and yellow lines further into suburban areas.

He is against Montreal mayor Valérie Plante's proposed pink STM line, which would connect Montréal Nord, the downtown, and Lachine and offer an alternative to the overcrowded orange line.

But it is unclear exactly which transit projects the new revenue would fund.

In addition to possible orange line extensions into Laval and to the Bois-Franc commuter train station in the borough of St-Laurent, there are concrete plans to extend the blue line to the borough of Anjou.

The STM has already taken steps to make the 5-station extension a reality.

Plans to extend the yellow line and create the pink line are less definite. Though Québec Solidaire proposed a yellow line extension further into the downtown during the 2018 campaign season, most discussion of work on the line concerns expansions into the South Shore.

Mayor Plante made the pink line the cornerstone of her mayoral campaign in 2017.
