Health inspectors are the unsung heroes of consumer protection: without them, we would probably all be eating rat poop and paint chips.
Every year, official Montreal health inspectors inspect a number of restaurants, bakeries, distribution centers, and butcher counters, looking for signs that the establishment is not respecting food safety laws. The results are sometimes... surprising.
When a restaurant fails a health inspection, the results are made public and compiled here. Infractions can range from chipped paint on the wall to animal excrements, so, there's obviously quite a range here. I've rounded up some of the worst infractions from the last four months, and I've summarised why the establishment received the fine.

Why: For having unclean dishes, ustensils or location.

Why: For having insect or animals, or their excrements, in the restaurant or retaurant-affiliated vehicle.

Dragon de Chine
Where: 4596 Rue de Verdun, Verdun
Why: For having an unclean location, or unclean materials, ustensils or storage.
Fine: $1200
Tiki Ming
Where: 7077 Boul. Newman, LaSalle
Why: For not keeping products other than fruits and vegetables at a temperature lower than 4 degrees until its delivery to consumers.
Fine: $1700
PHO NGOC TUAN
Where: 4647 Rue Jarry Est, St-Léonard
Why: 2 infractions: one for uncleanliness of location and one for not keeping products other than fruits and vegetables at a temperature lower than 4 degrees until its delivery to consumers.
Fine: $2100 in total
Restaurant Woodland
Where: 5443 Rue Wellington, Verdun
Why: One for having animals or insects, or their excrements, in the restaurant. The other for having chipped or decaying walls where they prepare food.
Fine: $1550 in total.
Pizzeria Moretti
Where: 1059 Rue Wellington, Montréal
Why: Their staff was not wearing either hairnets or beardnets

Restaurant Pho Bang New York
Where: 1001 Boul. Saint-Laurent.
Why: For having animals or insects, or their excrements, in the restaurant.

Paris Cafe
Where: 1333 Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montréal
Why: 2 infractions: one for having animals or insects, or their excrements, in the restaurant. The other is for not passing cleanliness tests for either their location, their ustensils or their food storage.

Where: 201 Av. Laurier Ouest, Montréal
Why: For not keeping heat-alterable products, other than fruits or vegetables, at a temperature below 4 degrees.
Fine: $250.
Coree Atti Express
Where: 733 Rue Cathcart, Montréal
Why: For having animals or insects, or their excrements, in the restaurant.
Fine: $1000
Coree Atti Express has reached out to explain that they immediately rectified the situation after receiving notice from inspectors.
L'Gros Luxe
Where: 2472 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Montréal
Why: For not keeping heat-alterable products, other than fruits or vegetables, at a temperature below 4 degrees.
Fine: $850
Boucherie La Preference
Where: 7500 Boul. des Galeries-d'Anjou, Anjou
Why: Trickery or attempted trickery on the state, nature, origin etc. of the food.
Fine: $1500.
Restaurant Pushap
Where: 4777 Boul. des Sources, Pierrefonds
Why: For not maintaining the internal temperature of heat-variable food other than fruits and vegetables at less than 4 degrees celsius.
Fine: $3000
