TL;DR Left turns at busy intersections are a leading cause of pedestrian deaths in Montreal. As a result, many Montreal boroughs are looking to completly prohibit left turns at their busiest intersections.

From this example, it's clear that allowing drivers to turn left at an busy intersection has major consequences, and the mayor of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, François W. Croteau, is convinced that he did the right thing by making it illegal to turn left at intersections in his borough.

Other boroughs in Montreal will likely be following suit.

The TVA report goes on to confirm that left turns are the real problem when it comes to road safety in Montreal.

According to researchers, left turns are problematic because the driver must give their full attention to the oncoming traffic in the opposite direction.

As a result, the pedestrians are forgotten, and as the vehicle take a quick left turn, the driver may only notice pedestrians when it's too late.

Valerie Plante is aware of the issue, but confirms that it's up to each borough to  manage and change the signage at each intersection.

In the end, the prohibition of left turns at intersections may require Montreal drivers to take additional detours, but considering that it could save a life makes this new driving regulation well worth it.
