November 3 is a momentous day for our neighbours to the south, as Joe Biden and Donald Trump face off to be the next president of the United States. But as a bordering nation, Canada knows that what happens in a U.S. election impacts what happens here.

According to a new survey by Montreal marketing firm Léger, 78% of Quebecers are worried about the outcome of the U.S. election.

This is marginally more than any other region in Canada. Overall, 75% of Canadian respondents said they were worried.

78%

Quebecers worried about the outcome of the U.S. election.

Of the 78% of Quebec respondents who said they were worried, 30% were "very worried" and 48% were "somewhat worried."

Twenty-two percent were "not worried."

The survey focused on six reasons for concern regarding the fallout of the election:

  • Increased racial tensions leading to protests and violence
  • The possibility of significant civil unrest or violence in the streets on election day or the following days
  • Not having a clear winner on election day and the chaos that may follow if several days are needed to declare a winner
  • The incumbent refusing to accept the result of the election if he was on the losing side
  • A complete breakdown of the political system in the US, leading to a period of social chaos
  • A stock market crash in the days following the election

Of these six reasons, Quebec respondents said they were most concerned about increased racial tensions, and the possibility of civil unrest or violence following the election, at 79%.

Quebec respondents said they were least concerned about a breakdown of the U.S. political system and a stock market crash, at 60%.

Léger surveyed a representative sample of 1,516 Canadians, its methodology section says. Data collection took place from October 29 to November 1 via Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing technology.
