The first specially created WiFi equipped bus has just rolled out onto the streets of Montreal.

Thanks to telecommunications company Distributel, the STM gained its first "Wi-Fi Web-surfing bus" yesterday, designed to look like a Hawaiian surf bus. Distrbutel went really hard with the "surfing the web" theme.

Previously, only the 747 Express bus to Pierre- Elliott-Trudeau airport offered internet access. Now several routes will have 'net, as the STM and Distributel test out the new bus over the course of the summer.

Here are the routes:

  • May -  the 150 on René-Lévesque
  • June - the 24 on Sherbrooke
  • July - the 10 on De Lorimier

Hopefully if these test routes go well, we'll see some permanent WiFi-buses on the STM's major bus routes. If the metro finally becomes fully 'net-enabled, we'll be able to watch cute animal videos during our entire commute...which will be a good thing and a bad thing.

Excited to ride the Wi-Fi Web-surfing bus?
