Montreal's "Moe's" Is Closing Down Forever
A greasy spoon the entire city loved.
Moe’s-Casse-Croute-du-Coin, or just Moe’s to most of us located at the corner of Rue Lambert Closse and Blvd. de Maisonneuve, which has been a staple of Montreal since 1958 is tragically closing its doors on December 7th, 2015. After being put up for sale back in February 2015 no one has seriously approached the Thomas family, who own the restaurant, with a serious offer to keep it afloat. All of this comes to a shock to us and many other Montrealer's. The sad news was made official via their Instagram account Tuesday evening.
"It is with great sadness that Big Ed and the Moes family must let you know that we are officially closing two weeks from today. (December 7th). As everyone knows, businesses in general are not doing well as of late and unfortunately, Moes is not excluded from this fact. We were planning to sell and hoping that someone would be able to keep it going, but no one is interested in taking on the responsibility of owning a 24h diner as it is undoubtedly a lifetime of work.
As Eddie's daughter and Bessie's granddaughter, I would just like to take a second to underline the fact that my grandparents came here from Greece with nothing to their name's and made an outstanding life for themselves and their children.
With Eddie taking over as owner in 97, I have to say I am endlessly grateful to have been able to grow up in such a fun and loving environment. My dad has been working at Moes and putting in ridiculous hours since the age of 16, and his hard work and my grandma's refusal to ever retire is what has kept our diner afloat for so long despite the hard economic times. Unfortunately, they have caught up to us.
Eddie and all of the Thomas family would like to thank all of our regular customers. A lot of you have become part of our family over the years. We have grown with you. I know tons of you say you've known me and my brother since we were in diapers. I don't know that my childhood could ever have been better than what it was. We love you. And to the customers who weren't necessarily regulars: we love you just as much. Moes has been your home just as much as it has been ours and we are so sorry that this is what it has come to.
Please, please, if you have a sec, stop by sometime before we shut the doors forever, for old time's sake.
I am writing this with tears in my eyes but I am thankful for everything this diner has brought to my life, my parent's and my grandparent's lives. I hope you are too.
The Thomas family"
