Beach season may be over but the city's sandy locales are not out of the mayor's thoughts, as Denis Coderre announced this morning his desire to rename the beach at Parc Jean-Drapeau. If his request is approved, the beach will be renamed Jean-Doré beach, reports JdM.
Jean Doré, for those in need of a quick history lesson, was the mayor of Montreal from 1986 to 1994. A month ago, Doré was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, though that was not Coderre's incentive.
According to the current mayor of Montreal, the renaming of Parc Jean-Drapeau will simply be a gesture to honor the work done by Doré during his time in office. Doré was the mayor who oversaw the renewal and reconstruction of the parks and beaches on Île Ste-Hélène, so it is fitting for Parc Jean-Drapeau beach to gain his namesake.
Coderre will need to proposition the name change to the Commission de Toponymie du Québec before anything is official.
